At first glance, a backpack holds little more than probably some books and pencils. But when it comes to those that will be stew around Collin College this month, they symbolize a college student who lost his or her life to suicide. In an effort to "Send Silence Packing," the Collin College chapter of the national Active Minds, Inc. student advocacy group is recognizing the annual 1,100 college students lost to suicide nationwide by sharing the stories of these individuals.

Has been appointed by Texas A&M System chancellor John Sharp to serve as the first system campus representative on the newly created Texas A&M System Office of Sponsored Research Services (OSRS) Advisory Board.
The advisory board will meet regularly and provide guidance to the OSRS, which aids A&M System member institutions and agencies in the processing of proposals for sponsored projects, including grant submissions to funding agencies and post-award administrative assistance throughout the duration of the project. The OSRS aims to increase efficiencies system-wide.
"It is a great endeavor to maximize research efforts, while being more efficient. I am extremely honored to serve on this advisory board," Tallant said. "It is a real testament to the level of research we do at this campus and the confidence the chancellor has in our institution in the area of research."
Tallant will join M. "The celebration of International Education Week is important because it allows individuals to immerse and familiarize themselves on various cultural backgrounds. This week will encompass many areas, but most importantly, it is a time for all to be educated internationally and globally," said Kristen Wilkes, Intercultural program coordinator. "It also allows for people to share their intercultural experiences and how those experiences have since shaped their lives."

Texas A&M University - San Antonio
"When Governor Perry challenged us about making education affordable, we said, 'We can do it,'" according to a statement from Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier, president of Texas A&M University - San Antonio (TAMU-SA). "But we need to do it with partners. We need to do it with K-12, with community colleges and then us."
The San Antonio program will offer bachelor of applied arts and sciences degrees with an emphasis on information technology. Participating students will take 60 hours of dual-credit courses in high school, followed by 27 credit hours at Alamo Colleges. They'll finish their degrees by taking 36 credit hours at TAMU-SA. The university says the degree will cost less than $10,000.
"This degree plan is an excellent representation of how our education institutions are working together to meet the high demand for skilled graduates in the information technology and security fields," Ferrier says. Students can enter the degree track as early as fall 2012, by taking college-level coursework in high schools in the San Antonio, Judson and Comal independent school districts.

George Martin
President
St. Edward's University
George Martin was a lifelong New Yorker before moving to Austin in 1999 to be the president of St. Edward's University. He grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Brooklyn and, unlike most kids, he didn't have any aspirations for adulthood. His life was almost cut short when two planes collided in the sky above New York. Luckily, one shifted position before hitting the school and landed less than a block away. He goes back to visit the site every once in a while, where there is still evidence of the crash. Dr. Martin survived to become an active student, getting involved in speech and debate in high school, which may have led to his interest in politics. After high school, he stayed in Brooklyn, commuting to St. John's University, where he got his bachelor's degree, and then to Fordham University, where he got his masters and doctoral degrees - all in political science. Director of Programs & Operations
Just a quick mention that the first cohort of TXCELS students are almost finished completing their online, 6-week, pass-fail, certification in engagement, leadership, and service. We would like to extend special gratitude to Dr. Jean DeWitt of the University of Houston Downtown for her dedication to teaching this course.
You will notice that our
creative director, Zeke Guadiana, now has our Live. Learn. Serve. Remember. service-learning program model on our website. Be sure to find it under our "program" tab. This is a tremendous resource for our faculty to incorporate into their curricula this Spring or if you are a student, please be sure to send your fire safety thank you card to a fireman or firewoman today!
Pictured above is Grad Dog, the official mascot of C3 Texas,
who is showcasing the TXCELS graduation cords that every
student will receive upon completion. A great resume builder
so be sure to stay tuned for our 2013 Spring course offering.

I'd like to take a moment to extend special and heartfelt gratitude to our board of directors, each of whom has given of their time, talents, brainpower, and genuine dedication. In fact, I just received another $1000 donation from a board member today which brought tears to my eyes.
Amidst all the economic and political turmoil, and through our disaffiliation, we have held our own. The staff have worked long hours on critical initiatives such as increasing membership, National recognition as Carnegie Community Engagement Classification & Presidential Honor Roll Trainings for your faculty and administrators, increased visibility for you, your faculty, and your students, re: Advisory & Collegiate Councils, publishing, networking, award, and grant opportunities for your faculty and students, a statewide network of experienced advocates to design best campus to community partnerships, exclusive access to our state's first online Certification in Engagement, Leadership, and Service [TXCELS], educational affiliate memberships for non-profits and school districts, have allocated $9,000 in scholarships through our Ability Pediatric Therapy STEM Scholarship, service learning workshops for our members, internships and service stipends for our students, launch of our My Texas Helps, new partnerships with non-profits, as well as our newly revamped website.
The continued leadership of our state-wide board of directors has helped to foster a civic ethos across all parts of campus and educational culture; making civic literacy a core expectation for all students; practicing civic inquiry across all fields of study; and advancing civic action through transformative partnerships. Thank you for partnering with us to graduate students who are ready to contribute to the Texas workforce.
Traditionally, Board members have also been our strongest individual funders, giving us generous personal gifts to help sustain our operations. These personal gifts not only help underwrite our operations, but provide solid evidence of their commitment to C3 Texas and its mission - something many foundations and other donors watch for keenly from board members. As we enter the final quarter of 2012, the team at C3 Texas thought it appropriate that you get an up close and personal look at the remarkable leaders at the helm of higher education in the grand State of Texas.
From our home to yours ~ the C3 Texas Team would like to wish everyone a blessed, memorable, and joyous Thanksgiving. Oh and by the way -- be sure to take a moment to peruse my educational reading picks for this week. Please feel free to send me any newsworthy information about your campus good works or articles or resources you'd like to share with others.
I continue to remain blessed for having such meaningful work and grateful for having such wonderfully talented colleagues. I greatly value and appreciate each of you and could not do my job without your guidance, mentorship, and unwavering support in our mission of transforming education for the public good.
Warmly and in service,
Patricia
