The concert will feature music by Louis Prima, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, George Shearing, Rodgers and Hammerstein and more, as well as a demonstration of circle singing, a spontaneous community-singing experience in which the audience may take part. Admission is free. "We continue our focus on vocal jazz as an art form, and this year we are thrilled to have Roger Treece join us as guest artist," said Rebecca Windham, director of the Cardinal Jazz Singers and an instructor in the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music. "Roger will share his wonderful skill for improvisation and his concept of 'CircleSongs,' which integrates composition, arranging, teaching and conducting with a terrific component of audience participation."
Treece is a composer, producer and singer who creates music that combines classical elements with jazz, funk, gospel and world music. Among other accolades, he received critical acclaim for his work with Bobby McFerrin on the album "VOCAbuLarieS," which was nominated for three Grammy Awards, including best classical crossover album. He is the author of the book "CircleSongs: The Method." "The concert will be a fun evening of music, with a little something for everyone," said Windham. "The audience can expect to hear from the group as an ensemble as well as from solo vocalists all supported by live musicians." During his visit to LU, Treece will also give master classes April 27 at 11:30 a.m. and April 28 at 12:45 p.m. in the music department's rehearsal hall. ABOUT THE CARDINAL JAZZ SINGERS:
LINDA GREATA, soprano, is making her third concert appearance with the Cardinal Jazz Singers, having been one of the founding members of the group since Spring 2014. She was born and raised in Wayne, New Jersey, 60 miles from New York City, and to this "Jersey" girl, music has always been an important part of her life. Linda sang her way through school from elementary to high school and college. She sang with several choirs both in church and civic groups and was a soloist in a rock band in the 1970's. She moved to Texas in 1998 and started singing in the LDS church in Port Arthur and in 2002 joined the just forming Symphony of Southeast Texas Chorus (SOST). She then joined Beaumont Interfaith Choral Society and became the choir director at Silsbee LDS church. Since joining the Cardinal Jazz Singers, she loves the music and has been enjoying the whole experience. RANI HAMPTON,soprano, hails from Houston, TX is an undergraduate student at LU in the Theatre and Dance program. She joined the Cardinal Jazz Singers in the spring semester 2015 as a junior with the objectives of learning musicianship and improving her vocal technique. She has been working diligently with LU voice faculty Ms. Greschner and Ms. Windham to further her long term goals toward becoming professional singer and building a career in music as a solo artist. Her hobbies include songwriting, singing, dancing, and entertainment overall. Ms. Hampton is grateful for the learning experience in the jazz choir and plans to further herself in classical and jazz styles. TAMARA DAVIS,second soprano/alto, is from Houston, TX and a Freshman at Lamar University, majoring in accounting. She love to sing, act and hang out with friends. She's been in multiple live performances including a reenactment of the broaway production "The Wiz" in which she played the lead role of Dorothy. She sings alto in the jazz choir as well as second soprano. Her plans are to complete school with a masters degree and obtain a CPA license, moving on to become a financial advisor. She intends to be a part of the Cardinal Jazz Singers for as long as it is open to the Lamar Students. NIA IMANI WILLIAMS, alto, is originally from Waterloo, IA and now lives in Beaumont, TX. She enjoys powerlifting, and anything related to music. She plays the cello and the guitar, and is a member and lead guitarist of the band 'Distinct Melody,' alongside her younger brothers. A musically inclined young woman, she has performed on stages since childhood, starting at 6 years of age. Recently, she decided to expand her musical abilities into the jazz genre, and is enjoying the experience. "I've always loved jazz. I sometimes wish I was born into that era!" Her favorite jazz artists include Billie Holiday, Nancy Wilson, Nat King Cole, and Frank Sinatra, among countless others. GRACE MATHIS, singing alto and tenor, is from Beaumont, TX. She has been singing since the age of three, participating in both school and church choir, including her time at Houston Baptist University, under the direction of John Yarrington. Since then, she has participated in the Beaumont Interfaith Choral Society, as well as performing at open mike nights and in professional singing gigs around town. Singing is her number one passion. NOAH BOLICH, a freshman at LU, rounds out the group, singing bass. This is Noah's first experience singing in both a solo vocal jazz and a vocal jazz ensemble setting. REBECCA WINDHAM, director, is a native Tennessean and Rhodes College graduate with three CDs to her credit, a vocal jazz arrangement on the Sony/BMG record label, and a combined performance, recording and touring resume spanning the United States, England, Scotland, Wales, France and Japan. She has opened for Mel Torme, worked with Mac Frampton and the Hollywood Hills Orchestra, the Atlanta Pops and co-founded the acclaimed vocal jazz quartet, South City Voices.
Ms. Windham has also appeared as a performing artist/lecturer with nationally renowned author Dr. Philip Furia at Middle Tennessee State University for a tribute to songwriter Johnny Mercer. She teamed once again with South City Voices for the second album of pop recording artist Brent Cash on the German record label, Marina Records, released in 2011. As a composer, Ms. Windham's musical composition setting to The Mirror Poems won national recognition in the 2012 NATS Art Song Composition Competition.
Versatile as both performer and educator, Ms. Windham is in her second year at Lamar University as Instructor of Music and Director of the Cardinal Jazz Singers. Since moving to the area, she is active as a professional musician on voice and piano, conducts master classes, and maintains a private teaching studio serving the Southeast Texas area.
