Angel and Umberson recognized by GSA

 

Jacqui Angel received the James Jackson Outstanding Mentorship Award for outstanding commitment and dedication to mentoring minority researchers in the field of aging.

Deb Umberson received the Richard Kalish Innovative Publication Award for the article, “Gender and Social Isolation Across the Life Course.” This award recognizes insightful and innovative publications on aging and life course development in the behavioral and social sciences.

As the 2022 Baltes Distinguished Research Award Recipient, Karen Fingerman delivered an invited address. She also presented at the APA Science Summit Symposium, "Behavioral, Social and Cognitive Dimensions of Aging" and co-chaired the session, "Loneliness and Social Connection in Late Life: A Conversation with Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad."


Liz Muñoz chaired the session, “Intersecting Identities in Late Life: Age, Race and Ethnicity, and Sexuality and Gender.”


And congratulations to Dr. Crystal Ng! Ph.D. UT Austin '22.

Winner of the APA Division 20 Dissertation Award in Psychology of Aging, presented at APA on 8/4/23. Crystal is now a postdoc at the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan.

NIMLAS Annual Pilot Project Competition: Request for Pilot Project Applications


The Network for Innovative Methods in Longitudinal Studies of Aging (NIMLAS) seeks pilot project proposals to conduct methodological research in one of the following four thematic research areas: (1) Creation of new data on aging minority populations; (2) Design or analytic techniques for addressing attrition in longitudinal studies of aging; (3) New technologies for capturing measures of relevance to aging research (e.g., passively collected measures of physical activity); and (4) Innovative methodologies for obtaining consent for data collection. In 2023, NIMLAS expects to fund three (3) methodological pilot projects with a primary focus on at least one of the four thematic areas listed above. Proposals that address multiple thematic areas are also encouraged.



Submit pre-proposals by 9/11/23.

Invited full proposals due 10/9/23.

Seminar on Kinlessness and Living Alone at Older Ages - videos and presentation slides available


On 5/15/23 the Committee on Population held a half-day public seminar to identify some of the key research and data questions and priorities regarding: definitions and estimates of kinlessness and living alone, population-level data sources, data gaps, and measurement needs; mechanisms through which individuals end up becoming kinless or living alone; positive and negative consequences of these statuses for health and well-being; and cross-national variation in social contexts and public policies that moderate the impact of aging alone on health outcomes.
