CELEBRATE MLK DAY OF LEARNING VIRTUALLY
|
Please join us on Monday, Jan. 18, as we gather virtually to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Capital University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Learning. The theme of the 2021 event is “Why We Still Can’t Wait,” a reflection on Dr. King’s 1964 book about nonviolence and the struggle against racial segregation – a topic that is just as relevant today as it was 57 years ago.
This year’s keynote speaker is Trey Ellis, an Emmy- and Peabody-winning filmmaker, American Book Award novelist, NAACP Image Award playwright, essayist, and professor of Professional Practice at Columbia University’s School of the Arts.

PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORIES OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
|
The Schumacher Gallery will host an exhibition titled “Danny Lyon: Memories of the Southern Civil Rights Movement” from Jan. 18 to March 27.
Danny Lyon helped define a mode of photojournalism in which the photographer is deeply and personally embedded in the subject matter that they are capturing. Lyon began his photographic career in the early 1960s as the first staff photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, a national group of college students who joined after the first sit-in by four Black college students at a North Carolina lunch counter.
From 1963 to 1964, he traveled the South and Mid-Atlantic regions documenting the Civil Rights movement. These images capture life as it was – from prohibiting Blacks from activities, to requiring separate building entrances and water fountains, to sit-ins and protests – and the reactions that resulted. These photographs were published in “The Movement,” a documentary book, and later in “Memories of the Southern Civil Rights Movement,” Lyon’s memoir of his years working for the SNCC.
The Gallery will also be hosting #ArtUnitesCbus photographers in conjunction with the Greater Columbus Arts Council. This exhibit highlights photos taken this past summer during the Black Lives Matter protests downtown and a selection of the murals that were created.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Located on the fourth floor of Capital University’s Blackmore Library, the Schumacher Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 12-3 p.m., and Saturday, 1-5 p.m.
The Schumacher Gallery app is available as a free download from the iTunes App Store and the Google Play App Store. This mobile docent app will enhance your overall experience of the gallery and provide an insider’s look of the artwork.

‘TAKE A BREATH, TAKE A BREAK’ STUDENT WELLNESS SERIES
|
As we begin the semester, we know our students are feeling more stressed than usual – with classes, work, student organization responsibilities, family obligations, and of course, COVID-19 making everything more complicated.
Throughout the semester, the University will host a series of wellness programs for students, including tabling events, fun virtual events, virtual speakers, and even a few surprise pop-up Starbucks “scan our code” days! Our hope is these small breaks from the day-to-day life responsibilities will allow you space to reflect, be silly, and celebrate the small victories.
Thursday, Jan. 14
12-3 p.m.
Student Union
The first is a tabling event where students can pick up journals (while supplies last) to use throughout the semester. Student & Community Engagement will be posting journaling prompts throughout the semester on Instagram (@capitalsce).
Thursday, Jan. 14
8-9:30 p.m.
Drawing from 21 years of teaching and clinical experience in mental health and wellness, Goli Gabbay will teach students hands-on techniques and healthy lifestyle practices that will uplift your mental, emotional and physical well-being. In her interactive program, Gabbay will help you enhance your brain health, transform stress/anxiety, and leave you with a deep experience of serenity, ease and calm. DO YOU HAVE A STORY TO TELL?
|
At a time when it’s so important to engage with one another and connect to the world around us, Capital Stories is here for you.
We encourage students, faculty, and staff to share these stories and others through their own social media platforms.
Or – better yet – visit www.capital.edu/stories to learn how you can tell your own story, whether it’s reflective, creative, memory-evoking, funny, poetic, or persuasive. It doesn’t have to be long; if accepted for publication, 750 words – give or take a hundred – would be perfect.
And while we want to read your words, working in a digital tool allows us to broaden the ways in which we can creatively share our stories. Maybe there are no words at all; maybe it’s a video, a powerful photo, or a series of photos that best tell your Capital story. If your story is published, we’ll give credit where credit is due by including your byline.

ATHLETICS RESTARTING JAN. 22 – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- First and foremost, the health and safety of our student-athletes and staff are Capital’s first priority when policy and protocol are being considered and implemented.
- Only essential personnel will be permitted at games and events through the month of February. This, unfortunately, means there will be no fans, media, or support groups (cheer, pep bands, etc.). Fan attendance will be reassessed in late February.
-
Schedule changes will likely happen, so stay alert to changes that are announced via our social media channels or athletics website.
- We still need your support, so watch all games (home or away) streamed online this season. Links will be provided on the athletics website and social media channels.

FEATURE: PIVOTAL MOMENTS SET UP ALL-AMERICAN JOSH MILLER FOR FAIRYTALE ENDING

After COVID-19 took away his chance to compete for a national championship in the shot put in March 2020, the All-American senior has used that energy to fuel his fire for the 2021 season. We revisit Josh’s career, which has been quite the journey, and how his challenges and blessings have moved him to be more determined than ever to bring a championship to Capital. -- full story --
