MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY OF LEARNING
Please join us on Monday, Jan. 18, as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Capital University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Learning. The theme of the 2021 event is “Why We Still Can’t Wait,” a reflection on Dr. King’s 1964 book about nonviolence and the struggle against racial segregation – a topic that is just as relevant today as it was 56 years ago.

Even though the 2021 event will take place virtually, students, staff, faculty, and members of the Central Ohio community will have an opportunity to be challenged by the keynote speaker, engage in meaningful dialogue during the workshops, and enjoy music that will touch the soul.

Additional information will be shared in January.
MLK SPIRIT AWARD NOMINATIONS DUE DEC. 6
Nominations are being accepted through Dec. 6 for the second annual Martin Luther King Spirit Award, which will be awarded on Jan. 18 at the 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Learning.

The Spirit Award is given to one Capital University senior who is in good academic standing and exemplifies leadership, on and off campus, through the following characteristics:

  • Service: Someone who is committed to creating deeply rooted connections or partnerships with the community and our neighbors. They act in pursuit of human dignity and social justice while working to build a better tomorrow.
  • Authenticity: This student has grown into themselves and voices their individual truth. This student’s actions and words are congruent with their beliefs and values and even in the face of adversity, they hold true to their values and true to themselves.
  • Courage: This student is not afraid to step up in the face of adversity. They exhibit this characteristic in their everyday lives not only to defend themselves, but also to support others in defense for them. The student advocates for others and what they believe in and they work to build an environment structured on inclusion and respect.
  • Excellence: Shows a commitment not only in the classroom but also outside the classroom and consistently engages in open dialogue discussing issues and problems close to their heart. They display a thirst for knowledge from multiple perspectives through open dialogues and critical exploration. They strive to share that knowledge with others.

BRINGING NEW LIFE TO BATTELLE HALL
Over the summer, a new roof was installed over the 1978 addition of Battelle Hall, encompassing the north and west sections of the building.

  • An Inverted Membrane Roof System, sometimes called an “upside down” roof, was installed with the rubber membrane underneath the insulation, which protects the membrane from ultraviolet degradation and constant temperature changes.
  • It also increased the R-value of the roof from an R-8 to an R-25, which will save money on air conditioning and heating energy costs.
  • Glass windows were replaced with insulated panels in the main server room to reduce heat and cooling loads.
  • Two exhaust fans that support the fume hoods in the east and west chemistry labs were replaced. The new exhaust fans are state-of-the-art and bring our system up to current HVAC and electrical code. Screen walls were installed to block views of these exhaust fans from Main Street and Pleasant Ridge.
  • A crack on the northwest façade of Battelle was repaired. Bricks were removed and replaced, and additional control joints were installed to allow more movement within the wall. Two louvers were removed and replaced, and a water repellent was applied to the entire area.
  • Other elements of the Battelle Hall project included: sealing the glass atrium windows; new roller shades installed in two classrooms; water stains on all ceilings and walls were painted; and all trees were pruned away from the building façade.
