Welcome Dimitra, Nicole, and Andrea!

We are thrilled to welcome Dimitra and Nicole, our intern supervisors, and Andrea, our new bilingual therapist.

Having dedicated intern supervisors allows us to provide a robust intern program that's unique in the Kansas City area. Dimitra and Nicole's guidance will be instrumental in shaping the next generation of mental health professionals.

Offering services in Spanish is one of our top priorities in promoting Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB). Andrea's skills and commitment will help us reach and support a broader community.

Welcome aboard! We look forward to the wonderful contributions each of you will bring to CAPA.

5 Tips for Balancing Fun and Routine this Summer

By Dr. Nicole Carleton, PhD, CAPA staff

During summer, there are many fun things to do like swimming, grilling, visiting museums or parks, and going on family trips. But by July, the excitement of a relaxed summer can wear off, and parents often notice more behavior issues in their kids. Having a daily routine in place can bring benefits for both kids and adults, keeping them physically and mentally healthy. It also helps everyone get ready for school again in the fall.

Here are some easy ways to add routine to your kids’ summer:

  1. Start with a morning meeting to plan the day. This helps kids know what to expect and reduces stress. Even if each day is different, the meeting itself gives structure.
  2. Keep regular meal and snack times. This helps kids stay energized and avoid mood swings. Plan meals together as part of your weekly routine.
  3. Stick to consistent wake-up and bedtime schedules. This helps kids stay rested and makes bedtime easier, even if it’s a bit later than during the school year.
  4. Plan downtime. It’s good to have free time each day for activities like reading, biking, or playing games. You can also schedule weekly family events for more routine and fun.
  5. Give kids responsibilities. This can boost their confidence and sense of belonging. Schedule time each day for these tasks, and plan rewards for when they’re done.

Just like flexible things that bounce back into shape, a flexible summer routine helps everyone enjoy their time while staying on track.

Another Successful Field Day!

We had so much fun at our 3rd Annual Play Like a Kid! a few weeks ago! More than 100 people joined us on the field, supported by amazing companies and groups that helped raise record-breaking funds for our mission.

One of the new games we added this year was Shoe Shotput. This is an easy activity to enjoy with friends and family this summer! Everyone lines up, loosens one of their shoes, and kicks it as far as possible. The shoe that flies the farthest is the winner!
