CONFERENCE BREAKOUT SESSIONS

You won't want to miss the following Tuesday afternoon Breakout Sessions:

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION - BELONGING, DIGNITY AND JUSTICE

Racism and discrimination are fundamental issues facing organizations of all kinds and society as a whole. Local governments that don’t proactively tackle racism and discrimination could also expose themselves to potential legal action, for example, in relation to their workplace policies, procurement policies, and services they provide to the public. Don Lidstone, K.C. of Lidstone & Company will introduce their free model Anti- Racial Discrimination and Anti-Racism Policy which has served as a starting point for some communities to build their first effective policies.

FOSTERING CIVIL DISCOURSE - HOW DO WE TALK ABOUT ISSUES THAT MATTER

ICMA FREE COACHING WEBINAR - MAY 18

ICMA is hosting a free Coaching Webinar on May 18, 2023 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. EST on "Fostering Civil Discourse - How Do We Talk About Issues That Matter".

From blogs to media to the local news we all seem to be wondering how to talk to each other without one party shutting down and walking away; or even worse, responding with violence. The ability to communicate with individuals who have vastly different viewpoints is a critical skill for municipal leaders and that is why communication and information sharing is one of ICMA's 14 Leadership Practices. A local government leader that cannot share information with their staff, Council, and residents will quickly find themselves in difficult situations.

Unfortunately, civil discourse is not easy. If it were, we would not need entire college courses on the subject. Join us for a discussion about why civil discourse is so important and learn some tips on how to do it well.

Topics:

    *  How to have authentic conversation

    *  How to disagree without being disagreeable

    *  Negotiation Skills

    *  Finding Common Ground in a Contentious Meeting

Speakers:

 1.  Alan Vanderberg, County Administrator, Kent County, MI

 2. Jonathan Lynn, ICMA-CM, City Manager, Rincon, GA

 3. Douglas Teschner Braver Angels New England Regional Leader

Register for this session here.

NOW IS THE TIME TO INVEST IN THE FRONT LINE
