Over the long term, reinvesting in human needs over militarism could be transformative. For far less than the $21 trillion spent on militarism in the 20 years after 9/11, the U.S, could allocate enough funds to do ALL of the following:
-
$4.5 trillion to fully decarbonize the U.S. electric grid
-
$2.3 trillion to create 5 million jobs at $15 per hour with benefits and cost-of-living adjustments for 10 years
-
$1.7 trillion to erase student debt
-
$449 billion to continue the extension of the Child Tax Credit for another 10 years
-
$200 billion to guarantee free preschool for every 3-and-4-year old for 10 years, and raise teacher pay.

A project of CALC
This project seeks to define how militarism,
racism and climate crisis are interconnected.
The project will document how national security is not rooted in militarism but rather
in the meeting of human needs such as health, education, good jobs,
good infrastructure and a livable climate.

is now sponsoring weekly vigils calling for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and Israel.
Please join us for a vigil calling for diplomacy and an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and Israel.

We abhor all violence. We are heartbroken by the killing and maiming of people in the Middle East, whether they are Palestinian, Israeli, or citizens of any other country, particularly innocent children, people with disabilities and the elderly.
We call for an immediate ceasefire and a stop to the killing or injuring or any type of violence to anyone. We demand sending humanitarian aid to the civilians affected, and demand members of Congress not send more military aid. Diplomacy not weapons is needed in the Middle East. Only the weapons manufacturers and oil industry benefit from war. The Military Industrial Congressional Complex has the biggest carbon footprint in the world.
In peace,

Support Youth Leaders
¡Apoya Unión de Activistas (UdA)!
| |
|
"Those four years taught me about the strength of our communities and the power our voices hold. Unión de Activistas was a safe haven for me."
-- Anahí, UdA graduate
As Anahí’s statement above reflects, Unión de Activistas provides a safe haven for students. Regenerating social connections and backing youth is more important than ever.
Given the increased requests we have been receiving to support students and families, we know this is not enough. A donor has backed UdA with an amazing $10,000 gift! Your generous contribution would allow us to build on this support and expand the hours of the UdA position. Additional staff hours would include professional development and time to coordinate the Radio Juventud Youth Radio Project.
Please use our donation page [www.nfggive.org/donation/93-0691194] to help fund UdA.

As 2023 -- the soon to be hottest year on record -- comes to a close, we look ahead to 2024 with anticipation… for international financing to help poor countries leap to clean electricity, for market forces to push renewables to new heights and for a saner & stronger democracy!
Projects next year include:
- Work with city council and staff, along with the Sustainability Commission, to enact policy that reduces climate pollution (e.g., no more parking mandates, a moratorium on new gas stations, increased housing density, more bus rapid transit), and metrics that show Climate Action Plan 2.0 progress
- Educate the community on real climate solutions (like heat pumps!), while debunking industry misinformation, through inventive ads and creative public messaging
- Advocate for concrete and attainable state legislation during this short session, including a bill to divest PERS funds from coal
- Pressure the Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) to promote solar, exclude small modular nuclear reactors in their plans, expand EV charging, and improve access to incentives for low income customers
- Support UO students to demand the university’s Thermal Taskforce take bold steps to transition off fossil gas
- Assist the Eugene Airport with research on options to build a solar resiliency hub
- Fight for a city-wide Climate Justice fund to accelerate the clean energy transition for underserved communities
- Stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our forest conservation allies to protect our precious biodiverse, carbon sequestering and storing mature and old growth forests through advocacy and direct action, and more.
Want to be part of the grassroots climate movement? Want to see real local change? 350 Eugene has been gaining influence and agency for over 10 years, leveraging our advocacy to demand long overdue climate action. We’re part of a growing progressive network, with intersecting movement objectives: a swift & equitable clean energy transition that looks to Indigenous wisdom and rights past wrongs, and stands down the fossil fuel industry and the unjust systems that empower them.

National and Opportunity Scholarship Applications
were opened on November 1 for 2024-2025
At TheDream.US, we work with a community of 80+ Partner Colleges to provide college opportunities. TheDream.US is the nation’s largest college and career success program for undocumented immigrant youth, having provided more than 10,000 college scholarships to Dreamers attending 80+ partner colleges in 20+ states and Washington, DC.
We believe everyone, regardless of where they were born, should have equitable access to a college education, a meaningful career, and opportunities to contribute to the communities they call home. Despite the fact that this is the only country they have ever known—they’ll receive no federal aid to go to college, have limited access to state aid, and often face paying out-of-state tuition.
There are approximately 2 million Dreamers in the country. 98,000 undocumented students, ages 15 to 19, graduate from high school every year. However, only 5-10% enroll in college. Undocumented students want to get a college education and help their families and communities prosper.
The Opportunity Scholarship closes on January 31, 2024.
The National Scholarship closes on Feb 29, 2024.

Thursday, January 18
6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Art House, 492 E. 13th Ave, Eugene

An Oregon Story: Saving our Beaches, Farmland and More is an engaging documentary that celebrates Oregon's pioneering conservation efforts. It tells the fascinating story of the farsighted and dedicated individuals who saved Oregon's beaches, farmland, and ranches from urban sprawl and other development. Oregon’s pioneering and innovative land-use planning program is still unique in the nation. The film features archival footage and interviews to honor those legislators, government officials, farmers, and ordinary citizens who protected Oregon's beaches, created its land-use planning program and defended it for the past 50 years.
Agriculture is the second largest sector in Oregon’s economy and the film showcases the vital role of farmland protection in ensuring the success of Oregon's farmers and ranchers. "An Oregon Story" is a tribute to Oregon's enduring commitment to protecting its picturesque beaches, its iconic places and preserving its fertile farmland and ranches for generations to come.

This unique collaboration of artists explores themes that remind the audience of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and the contemporary Black Lives Matter Movement. With humor even in the wake of dark topics, the show features performers from around the world with acts melding musical instruments from the African diaspora, traditional Gumboot dance, and modern Pantsula dance. This interactive, collaborative, and educational show will resonate with audiences today and for generations to come.

Where has Non-Violence Worked?
Follow-Up on Peace Lecture Question
At the Salem Peace Lecture featuring Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis in October, a question was asked about where one could find examples of nonviolence being used effectively for social change in today's world.
In response, I promised to send out a link to "Nonviolence News," a publication edited by novelist/activist Rivera Sun. She assembles 30-50 stories each week about people and groups who are employing nonviolence for social change. You can find (and subscribe to) "Nonviolence News" here: https://nonviolencenews.org.
