A project of CALC
This project seeks to define how militarism,
racism and climate crisis are interconnected.
The project will document how national security is not rooted in militarism but rather
in the meeting of human needs such as health, education, good jobs,
good infrastructure and a livable climate.

We abhor all violence. We are heartbroken by the killing and maiming of people in the Middle East, whether they are Palestinian, Israeli, or citizens of any other country, particularly innocent children, people with disabilities and the elderly.
We call for an immediate ceasefire and a stop to the killing or injuring or any type of violence to anyone. We demand sending humanitarian aid to the civilians affected, and demand members of Congress not send more military aid. Diplomacy not weapons is needed in the Middle East. Only the weapons manufacturers and oil industry benefit from war. The Military Industrial Congressional Complex has the biggest carbon footprint in the world.

May 31 marks our Annual Meeting and one of the City’s most cherished programs: the awarding of the Turtle Awards to those who have “stuck their necks out” to serve others and make Eugene a better place.
This year we are proud to honor recipients
Margaret Hallock, Brittany Quick-Warner, and Nadia Telsey.
Sadly, Nadia Telsey died on February 28, mere weeks after the Turtle Committee bestowed its honors. Nadia’s award will be accepted by her partner, Diane DePaolis. In addition, we are honored to bestow the Order of the Turtle Award, given posthumously for people who died since last May. , The recipients are listed on the event web page.
Speakers:
Margaret Hallock came to Eugene to join the UO faculty in 1974 as a PhD economist. She later served as senior economist for the state forecasting office and then as chief economist for SEIU #503. See the event web page for Margaret's extensive economic and legal contributions.
Brittany Quick-Warner is the President and CEO of the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce. She joined the Chamber in 2013 as event coordinator and, later, as Director of Business Advocacy. Then in 2017, after the sudden medical leave and death of long-time (25 years) leader and mentor Dave Hauser, she was appointed CEO at the age of 30.

Leonard Peltier Prayer Vigil

Old Federal Building
211 East 7th Ave. Eugene
Leonard Peltier has a parole hearing on June 10th and he needs us to be with him
in solidarity, praying worldwide for the hearing to go in his favor.
| |
|
Leonard Peltier, Anishinabe Dakota/ Lakota, is in his 48th year of maximum security prison. He is innocent. His case is rife with constitutional violations. He needs immediate medical care and to be released.
Leonard was convicted of the deaths (then switched to aiding and abetting) of two FBI agents in 1975 in South Dakota. His two co-defendants were found not guilty due to self defense. The prosecuting attorney and Attorney General later admitted that there is zero evidence of Leonard's guilt and have asked President Biden for his Clemency.
| |
|
The UN Sub-Committee on Arbitrary Detention (2022) determined that the only reason Leonard is incarcerated is because he is an Indian man.
Leonard is an AIM (American Indian Movement) Warrior who cares about his People. He is an artist, author, and humanitarian, He has millions of supporters worldwide.
He is in almost constant lockdown at Coleman 1 facility in Florida! He has recently begun to lose his eyesight and is in constant pain.

Why Should I Report?
While bias incidents and crimes sometimes target specific individuals, they often violate an entire group or community’s sense of safety and belonging.
Graffiti on the wall, fliers, anonymous emails, and language meant to harass individuals convey intolerance that impacts all of us. We want Oregon to be welcoming and inclusive.
You can report to us online any time: https://justice.oregon.gov/crimereporting/hatecrime

Have you experienced or witnessed a hate crime or a bias incident?
A hate crime is a crime motivated in part or whole by bias against another person’s actual or perceived protected class–their race, color, disability, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Examples include racist graffiti, stealing Pride flags, threats using slur words, assaulting someone based on their identity.
A bias incident is a non-criminal hostile expression motivated in part or whole by another person’s actual or perceived protected class, again meaning their race, color, disability, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Examples include hate speech; using a racial, ethnic, or other slurs; displaying hateful symbols or flags; creating racist images/drawings; mocking someone with a disability; or telling or sharing offensive “jokes” about someone’s identity.
Oregon’s Bias Response Hotline is here to listen, support, and help. Our “Report and Support System” is designed to support victims and help track hate crimes and bias incidents. We want to:

Where has Non-Violence Worked?
Follow-Up on Peace Lecture Question
At the Salem Peace Lecture featuring Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis in October, a question was asked about where one could find examples of nonviolence being used effectively for social change in today's world.
In response, I promised to send out a link to "Nonviolence News," a publication edited by novelist/activist Rivera Sun. She assembles 30-50 stories each week about people and groups who are employing nonviolence for social change. You can find (and subscribe to) "Nonviolence News" here: https://nonviolencenews.org.
