Become an SUD Counselor

If you are ready to become a registered SUD Counselor and begin working with clients, CADTP has your back!

Before being employed as a counselor in a DHCS licensed or certified program an applicant must register as a Substance Use Disorder Registered Counselor (SUDRC). Substance Use Disorder Counselor Certification is required by law for all those who provide counseling services in any program that is licensed or certified by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS).


CADTP provides all registration and certification services to SUD counselors throughout California. CADTP is one of three SUD counselor certifying organizations recognized by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), Licensing and Certification Division (LCD). As required in the regulations, all certifying agencies are currently accredited by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE), a part of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

Training Opportunities

Title 9 Regulations for Program for Alcohol and Drug-Impaired Drivers

The event is a training on the California Code of Regulations, Title 9, Division 4, Chapter 3, Programs for Alcohol and Drug Impaired Drivers which is open to any SUD Treatment Program and DUI Program stakeholders. The training will provide an interactive overview of key sections of Title 9, Chapter 3. Attendees will earn Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor continuing education hours (CEU’s), a light morning refreshment and lunch will be provided.

Clinical Supervision of Substance Use Disorder Counselors

This cognitive behavioral training delineates the difference between administrative and clinical supervision. The training uses techniques created by Rollnick and Miller (Miller & Moyers, 2006) to help supervisors conceptualize training based on team member’s stage of development; readiness to improve performance, and sustained behavioral change. The training accomplishes this through the use of exercises and case studies that allows participants to practice newly acquired skills. Attendees will earn Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor continuing education hours (CEU’s), a light morning refreshment and lunch will be provided.

CADTP Best Practice Suggestions for DUI Services Via Live Virtual Platforms

The California Association of DUI Treatment Programs (CADTP) presents updated Best Practice suggestions. DUI Programs that provided DUI Services via live virtual services during the COVID-19 pandemic met and created the Best Practices. As the pandemic ends, CADTP has updated the Best Practice Suggestions to ensure lasting quality DUI Program services utilizing Live Virtual Services that follow DUI Program regulations and generally accepted guidelines and platforms for telehealth.


Advance registration is required. 1.5 CEU will be free for those attending the entire session and completing the post-webinar survey.

Shatterproof Launches its Free SUD Treatment Locator in California


Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of addiction treatment, reduce the stigma of addiction, educate the public and advocate for change. Shatterproof’s Treatment Atlas (TreatmentATLAS.org) is a best-in-class web-based platform designed to help guide individuals to find appropriate care for substance use disorders. A consumer-friendly needs assessment (developed in collaboration with the American Society for Addiction Medicine) and robust filtering tools help people find treatment appropriate to the needs of the individual. Atlas users can assess treatment options based on patient reviews and the extent to which treatment facilities are aligned with Shatterproof National Principles of Care. Atlas is currently available in English and Spanish and includes providers in eleven states – CA, DE, FL, LA, MA, NC, NJ, NY, OK, PA, and WV – with three more to be added in 2023.
