Navigating the Intersection of Substance Use and Mental Health

By addressing the intersection of substance use disorders and mental health in an integrated and comprehensive manner, professionals can provide better support and outcomes for their clients.

In this article, we delve into the complex relationship between substance use disorders (SUDs) and mental health issues. Co-occurring disorders, often referred to as dual diagnosis or comorbidity, occur when individuals experience both SUDs and mental health conditions simultaneously. Understanding this intersection is essential for professionals working in the field of addiction and mental health treatment.

Why It Matters: Co-occurring disorders are prevalent among individuals seeking treatment for substance use, with estimates suggesting that more than half of those with an SUD also have a mental health disorder. Addressing both conditions concurrently is crucial because they can exacerbate each other and hinder the recovery process. Failure to treat co-occurring disorders comprehensively can lead to poorer outcomes and higher relapse rates.

The Naloxone Distribution Project

The Naloxone Distribution Project (NDP) aims to reduce opioid overdose deaths through the provision of free naloxone. Entities can apply to DHCS to have naloxone shipped directly to their address. Eligible entities include Substance Use Recovery Facilities (inpatient, outpatient, residential, sober living homes), and many other community organizations.

Since it began in October 2018, the NDP has distributed more than 2,980,000 kits of naloxone, which have been used to reverse more than 201,000 overdoses.

Apply here to receive free naloxone. Learn more about the impact of the NDP in this slide deck.

The NDP receives State General Funds from the State of California and opioid settlement funds from the Janssen and Distributors (J&D) Settlement Agreements.
