CADDRA ADHD and Substance Use Program
As the CADDRA ADHD and Substance Use Program (CASUP) continues online development, we would like to highlight some key information that will be discussed in greater detail in the course.
|
Substance use disorders (SUDs) are one of the conditions most commonly comorbid with ADHD, with approximately 1 in 4 people with ADHD also having a SUD. 1, 2
Individuals whose ADHD symptoms are untreated or undertreated may use substances as a form of self-medication, emphasizing the importance of thorough assessment, timely diagnosis, and adequate treatment. 2, 3
At worst, ADHD medications have no impact on SU/SUDs. At best, ADHD medication can help reduce the likelihood of early SU and later development of SUDs when children with ADHD are treated early and consistently and can improve SUD treatment outcomes. 4-9
