Tanya & Mariko

Butoh Performance Workshop with Mariko and Tanya
Company SoGono Artistic Director Tanya Calamoneri and former Dairakurakan dancer Mariko Endo team up for the fall series!  First class will be a mini-history lesson, screening of historical butoh pieces, and methodology discussion.  Tanya and Mariko will rotate teaching weeks, and combine their choreographies in the student showing at the end.

Butoh is an image-based movement exploration.  It asks what can a body do, and what is a body?  Each class will begin with a Noguchi gymnastic-based thorough mind-body workout, followed by image explorations, and then choreographic structures.  The 9 weeks will culminate in a student showing, with material from both teachers woven together.

About the teachers
Mariko Endo Reynolds is a professional Japanese Butoh Dancer. She trained with the legendary performer Akira Kasai, one of the co-founders of the Butoh movement. And she has also toured Japan and the United States as a principal dancer in one of Japan's representative Butoh companies, Dairakudakan. In addition to her foundation of dance, she has studied psychoanalysis and energy healing and that influences her approach to dance as a sculpture of consciousness. Since moving to NYC, Mariko has been involved in a variety of projects and teaching Butoh classes for dancers and actors who are looking to strengthen their presence on stage. http://butohnyc.blogspot.com/

Tanya Calamoneri is a choreographer, performer, and movement teacher, and the Artistic Director of Company SoGoNo. She is a former member of Shinichi Koga's inkBoat, and has studied intensively with Minako Seki, Ko Murobushi, Su-En, Yukio Waguri and others since 1999. She is currently completing her doctoral dissertation on butoh training methodology, based on interviews with ten leading butoh masters. Her company's projects have received awards from NY Innovative Theater, the Izzies, and grants from NYSCA, NYFA, AMC Live Music for Dance, Puffin, and Independence Community Foundation. She brings a long history of dance, Action Theater, yoga, and somatic studies to her butoh teaching and choreography. www.sogono.org
