****************************** health + education = success How exciting to prepare for the first day of the new school year. It's such a big responsibility to prepare our children as they transition back into "learning mode" - much more to prepare for than just those basic necessities! Back to school means increased exposure to a lot of germs (harmful bacteria and viruses). It's a good idea to do whatever you can to help keep your children's immune systems strong. One of the very best ways to fight off bad germs is to regularly use Young Living's therapeutic grade essential oils in daily life. The oil blend named Thieves was designed for the very purpose of warding off the yucky germs and keeping us healthy. Applied to the bottoms of the feet, these oils will be in every cell of the body within 20 minutes. Sending your children to school with the Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier is a great way for them to keep germs at bay throughout the day without exposure to harmful chemicals like triclosan and propylene glycol, which are found in many hand sanitizers on the market. Another beautiful way to use Thieves oil for health is to diffuse it, with or without water, at home. By breathing the oils directly into our lungs, they are carried into our blood stream to do their work wherever it's needed.
Lemon and peppermint a handy oils to have around if you do catch a cold. Lemon helps to release mucus, and peppermint clears and opens the airways. Both of these oils can be diffused, applied topically with a carrier oil, or added to cool or warm water and sipped on.
If your children are on the shy side or a bit nervous about going to school, there is an oil blend called Valor that was created to instill feelings of courage and self-esteem. You can apply a drop of this oil directly to the back of the neck or to the wrists.
Dr. Terry Friedman conducted a study in 2001 that found several essential oils helped to treat ADD and ADHD. Vetiver essential oil was found to be the most effective in observations and brain wave scans - showing improvements in 100 percent of subjects! Cedarwood essential oil was 83 percent effective and lavender essential oil was 53 percent effective.
A large amount of research has been conducted proving the effectiveness of peppermint essential oil in improving mental alertness and memory retention - both of which are helpful when learning new subjects or focusing on homework!
And finally, one of the best ways to keep physically, mentally and emotionally well is to get a good night's sleep. Two commonly used essential oils that help induce relaxation are lavender and Peace & Calming. Diffuse Peace & Calming at night in children's bedrooms to create a calming, relaxing atmosphere. This blend can help all of us feel more grounded and connected at bed time.
So get your children out there, oil them up and let the love of learning be theirs!

Watermelon Juice for Health
by Sayer Ji
July 22, 2013
Research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found watermelon juice is an effective remedy for reducing the recovery heart rate and muscle soreness in athletes who were given 500 ml of watermelon juice (16.9 oz) containing 1.17 grams of the naturally occurring amino acid L-citrulline.
Additional research indicates watermelon may possess the following health benefits:
Boosting Your Antioxidant Levels: Watermelon is exceptionally rich in lycopene (hence its red color) and other carotenoids such as lutein and beta carotene. A 2003 study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that regular watermelon juice consumption resulted in significant increases in blood plasma concentrations of lycopene and beta carotene. Keep in mind that lycopene has been found to have over 40 potential health benefits, and beta carotene (especially in its natural, food-complexed form) equally plentiful health benefits, adding extra significance to this finding. Also, the watermelon-induced increase in plasma antioxidant levels may lend explanation to why an epidemiological study of the Chinese found greater watermelon intake to be associated with a lower risk of cancer.
Reducing Blood Pressure/Improving Arterial Health:
A 2012 study published in the American Journal of Hypertension found that middle-aged obese subjects with prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension who were given 6 weeks of treatment with a watermelon extract containing 6 grams of L-citrulline and L-arginine daily, experienced reduced ankle blood pressure and altered carotid wave reflection, an indication of improved arterial function. The inability of the blood vessels to dilate and function properly is known as endothelial dysfunction, and is likely the most well-known initiating step in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. If watermelon can ameliorate or reverse this process, it would certainly provide a breakthrough alternative to many of the drugs used for primary prevention, such as the cholesterol-lowering statin drug class, whose side effects, numbering in the hundreds, include heart muscle dysfunction and damage.
