SC State’s head football coach Buddy Pough to retire after 2023 season


The 2023 football season will be the final one for South Carolina State head football coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough.

 

Pough, who is starting his 22nd season as Bulldog head coach, informed the team of his plan following a morning’s practice in preparation for the season opener against Jackson State in Atlanta.

SC State alumnus returns to alma mater as chief information officer


South Carolina State University President Alexander Conyers has appointed alumnus Eric Ham to serve as the university’s chief information officer (CIO).


Ham earned both his Bachelor of Science in mathematics education in 1996 and his Master of Education in secondary education in 2001 with honors from SC State.

Red Cross blood drive set for Thursday at SC State Student Center

 

The American Red Cross will conduct an HBCU Blood Drive at South Carolina State University’s Student Center on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

The drive will take place in the Student Center’s Bulldog Lounge.

Bulldog in their blood: Legacy families embrace opportunities at SC State


You can’t turn a corner in Cynthia Keller’s family without running into a South Carolina State University Bulldog.

 

Keller graduated from SC State in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology, which she has used in her career at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. Twenty-one years later, her daughter, Tamara Keller, is enrolled as a freshman at the university, continuing a legacy shared by several family members.

Clyburn to HBCU students at SC State summit: Transportation key to South Carolina’s future


Networking opportunities like what took place this week at South Carolina State University don't come often.

 

The inaugural One DOT University Transportation Summit hosted Wednesday and Thursday by South Carolina State University allowed students from South Carolina’s eight Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to network with federal and state transportation agencies about careers.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The South Carolina State University Army ROTC Bulldog Battalion awarded two 2nd lieutenant commissions to SC State and Claflin University students on Friday during its annual summer commissioning ceremony:


  • 2nd Lt. Whitney Kiena Nettles, an SC State business marketing manager from Columbia, South Carolina, will enter active duty in the Adjutant General Corps. Detailed Armor.
  • 2nd Lt. Nicole Rhiana Dixon, a Claflin sociology major from Sumter, South Carolina, will enter the Army Reserves.

Fear the Bite! SC State unveils dazzling new Bulldogs football equipment trailer


It’s big. It’s bold. It’s got Bulldog bite.

 

It’s a rolling billboard that will take South Carolina State University’s message around the United States.

 

SC State’s Department of Athletics unveiled its newly acquired Bulldogs-themed football equipment trailer in a ceremony on campus. The stunning 53-foot trailer will be used to haul the Bulldogs’ equipment to away games.

SC State, Claflin team up with local law enforcement for new substation 


South Carolina State University and neighboring Claflin University have joined forces with local law enforcement agencies to establish a community policing substation adjacent to the SC State Campus.

 

Both the City of Orangeburg’s Department of Public Safety and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office are partners with the two universities’ police departments in utilizing the joint substation to create more of a law enforcement presence in the areas near the two campuses.

HBCU Transformation Project receives $124 million investment to increase enrollment, improve efficiency, and expand pathways to economic mobility


The HBCU Transformation Project received a $124 million investment from Blue Meridian Partners, increasing its total investment to $184 million. The new investment will expand the Transformation Project’s work to drive systemic improvements among historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) nationwide.


Applications at South Carolina State University have increased 174% since 2020 and enrollment is up 54%, due largely to recent investments in technology supported by the Transformation Project, including new AI platforms and CRM software solutions that help students navigate the application and financial aid process.

Photos: SC State removes endzone bleachers with plan to build health & wellness center


South Carolina State University recently demolished a minimally used section of Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. The bleachers behind the endzone closest to Staley Field were removed to make way for a proposed health and wellness facility that would serve student-athletes as well as the general student body.

SC State Fall Convocation set for Sept. 14 on campus

 

South Carolina State University will conduct its annual Fall Convocation on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, beginning at 3 p.m. at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

 

Freshmen students are required to attend. The administration expects faculty members to attend, as well. Other students, employees and members of the public also are invited.

 

Dr. Jagruti Sahoo, associate professor of computer science and academic program coordinator, will be the featured speaker.

 

Classes will be canceled from 2-5 p.m.


SC State kicks off Presidential Scholarship Bus Tour in Augusta, Georgia


South Carolina State University kicked off its dynamic bus tour program with an inspiring and impactful visit Monday to Lucy Laney High School in Augusta, Georgia.


The second annual Presidential Scholarship Engagement Tour aims to connect with high school students, offer opportunities for higher education, and provide scholarships to enrich the academic journey of promising students.
