Bar Modeling for Problem Solving

In this series of videos, Dr. Yeap Ban Har explains "what the bar model is and how students use this principle to visualize mathematical concepts to solve problems. Bar Modeling is an essential maths mastery strategy."

In his second bar model video, aimed at parents, he explains how bar models are used in a Singapore-style Maths lesson.

ChatGPT and Ethics in the Math Classroom

This MAA Focus article by Gizem Karaali details the challenge that AI presents to Math educators including academic integrity, access and equity (not everyone can afford the upgraded version of Chegg or Photomath). Karaali mentions how "we had already adjusted and adapted to the computational knoweldge engine Wolfram Alpha, and before that, the advent of the electronic calculator." The ethical considerations include the idea that teachers and schools need to have a policy about what (if any) AI tools are permitted or encouraged.

Algebra I in Middle School?

It was 2019 at NCTM in Boston when I presented to a standing room only crowd on "Algebra I in Middle School?". Little did I know how popular and contentious this topic would be. Five years later, it is still a huge debate especially in San Francisco which has been delaying Algebra for all students until 9th grade.

About a quarter of 8th graders take Algebra I which can be important for a college preparatory high school education but can have earlier effects as in Philadephia.

The intention of 8th grade Algebra I is good as it can help propel students towards a STEM future. However, if students take Algebra I in 8th grade in NY and pass the Regents exam, it counts as a year of high school Math. In many high schools, only 3 years of Math is required so students may end their Math learning only halfway through HS.
