Dancing Away Driver Fatigue
New research by the Virginia Tech Transportation Research in early August cleverly titled “Analysis of Naturalistic Driving Data to Assess Distraction and Drowsiness on Drivers of Commercial Motor Vehicles,” analyzed over 3.8 million miles of data from seven fleets to measure the likelihood of certain driver behaviors to result in a safety-critical event.

  1. While any time drivers take their eyes off the road reduces safety, there is a significant increase in the likelihood of being involved in a safety-critical event when the driver is distracted for two or more seconds.
  2. The mean eyes off the roadway time for truck drivers while texting is four seconds.
  3. Most safety-critical events occurred in daylight, with no adverse conditions, on divided highways and in low traffic situations, suggesting drivers may be lulled into unsafe behaviors when perceived risk is low.
  4. Talking on a hands-free device reduced the risk of being involved in a safety-critical event.
  5. Dancing, talking, or singing showed a reduced risk of being involved in a safety-critical event. These activities also appear to reduce drowsiness.

Those of you working with Driver & Account Managers in the Fort Wayne Logistics or Operations buildings are aware of the rise of positive cases in the office in the last week.

Your patience is appreciated as we make necessary adjustments. The virus is extremely contagious and has spread quickly throughout our building.

We realize this is a concern for you, too. Please review the information below as a resource during this time.
OO / LP Drivers: The below is the guidance for CO Drivers and BHRI employees. The information below is based on current guidelines put forth. While Buchanan recommends you follow the same guidelines, the specific protocols, PTO references, etc. outlined below are not necessarily applicable for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  • I was exposed - when can I get a rapid test? Rapid tests are most likely to produce accurate results when administered five (5) days following exposure. Obtaining a rapid test any sooner increases the chances for a false negative. For your convenience, view this chart on exposure / testing timeline.
  • If I was vaccinated and have symptoms or was exposed to someone with symptoms, do I need to quarantine? Based on the current guidelines available, even vaccinated individuals need to quarantine / follow protocol when exhibiting symptoms or exposed to someone with symptoms.

  • Can I take an OTC test? While there are OTC / at home tests available, the company will not provide reimbursement for these tests. Tests completed at a medical facility / pharmacy, etc. will be reimbursed when your name, a date, location and result are able to be read.

  • I have a 5 day vacation in September that PTO is designated for/is approved for and I just got covid, what do I do bc I’m not cancelling my vacayProvided your respectful cooperation to keep our workforce healthy, Buchanan will work with you to divvy up your PTO vs unpaid leave for the time you are out sick and your later scheduled PTO. Additional PTO will not be added but can be split & distributed during your leave and pre-scheduled time out.

  • Can I submit tests for reimbursement prior to August 9, 2021? The company will ONLY provide reimbursement for an employee whom has followed the protocol outlined below and / or viewed at www.BuchananHauling.com/Covid after August 9, 2021.

  1. Do not come to the office with symptoms. Notify your manager & complete the reporting form found at www.BuchananHauling.com/Covid
  2. Schedule call with HR using the link found at www.BuchananHauling.com/Covid
  3. Remain out of the office until a negative test is held at a medical facility / pharmacy and results show name, testing site, date, etc.

The company reserves the right to refuse reimbursement for tests that do not align with reported symptoms, exposure, etc.
As always - THANK YOU for your continued patience and grace as we navigate this unchartered territory. While Covid is not new, this round does pose new circumstances. Every day brings a new set of questions and we are doing our very best to remain consistent and adhere to the guidance in place.
