Dear Families,
It was so wonderful getting back into the school routine and being all together for a full week. As we enter the second semester, students are hard at work in the classroom. This is always an exciting time of year because it is a time that we see many "light bulb" moments with our students. Students are really taking off in their academics and becoming true readers, writers, and mathematicians.
This week in math, students have been enjoying exploring the world of measurement. In kindergarten, students are learning how to measure different objects in the classroom. Students are learning how to describe all the ways we can measure an object, including measures of length, weight, and volume (how much it holds). I had the opportunity to do some exploring in Mrs. Lazerick’s class, where students were comparing how many dry erase markers tall their teacher was compared to their classmates. Non-standard measurement, which involves using everyday objects such as paper clips, blocks, or hand spans for measuring, helps children understand the basic concept of measurement. This foundational understanding is essential before moving on to standard units of measurement, which are more abstract.
I look forward to seeing more of these 'light bulb' moments as we progress through this semester, and I am excited to share these milestones with you. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Ms. Arianna DeGeorge
Bryden/Fairmount Principal
