Dear Families,
We have had an exciting week at Bryden and Fairmount! It’s been wonderful to get back into our school routine and enjoy a full week together!
As a principal, it has been truly remarkable to witness our students’ academic growth this year. Kindergarten students continue to build upon their reading and writing stamina. They are becoming true readers and writers! Throughout the year, we have focused on using specific strategies to build their fluency and comprehension skills. As you read at home with your kindergartener, please encourage them to do the following:
- Sound out unknown words
- Use Pointer Power (Point to each word as they read it)
- Retell the story when finished (i.e., characters, setting, beginning, middle, end)
- Make a text-to-self connection (What does the story make you think of? Was there a time that something like that happened to you?)

Classroom Spotlight: Ms. Kim’s Young 5’s Class
We started our life cycle unit and have two incubators in the classroom – one housing chicken eggs and the other duck eggs. Students learned that chicken and ducks are oviparous animals since they are born from an egg. We enjoyed candling the eggs this week to see the chicks moving inside. Egg candling involves shining a bright light through the shell to check the growth inside during incubation. Students look forward to the chicks hatching on April 25 and the ducks on May 2.

Save the Date: Beachwood Schools K-12 Art Show
Mark your calendar for the Beachwood Schools K-12 Art Show, hosted in partnership with the Beachwood Arts Council. From May 1 - 28, the Beachwood Community Center will showcase the creativity of our talented students in kindergarten through high school. Join us for an opening reception on Wednesday, May 1, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The evening will feature student musical performances. To get into the spirit, students are invited to color this coloring sheet designed by Beachwood Middle School art teacher Rachel Hartwig.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for Bryden Elementary School
We are excited to invite families to join us for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Bryden Elementary School. This special event will take place on Tuesday, May 7, at 9:30 a.m. It marks a significant milestone for our district as we bring together preschool and elementary students, staff, and community members. The assembly will feature a school-wide song, kid-friendly speeches from the design team, and ceremonial sod turning to celebrate the official start of construction. A rain date is planned for Tuesday, May 21, at 9:30 a.m. Please come and celebrate this momentous occasion with us!

K-6 Bison Fun Run
Join the Bison track and field team for the K-6 Bison Fun Run on Saturday, April 20. Students in grades K-6 will compete in a 100-meter dash at the Beachwood Track Invitational. All participants will receive a T-shirt, snack bag and award. The first-place boy and girl in each age group will receive a medal. Check in starts at 9:30 a.m., and the event begins at 10:30 a.m. Pre-registration is $20 or pay $25 at the door. Sign up!

Family Kindness Festival 2024
Rock out with kindness at the Family Kindness Festival! This free event, hosted by Senders Pediatrics on Sunday, May 5, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Beachwood High School, celebrates the theme "Kindness Rocks" with live music from Cleveland Keys Dueling Pianos, School of Rock House Band, Inlet Dance Studio, and Panorama Steel Drums. Meet inspiring students, engage with impactful nonprofits, create crafts for a cause, and enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities. Learn more on the Family Kindness website!

Kindergarten Registration is Open!
Kindergarten registration is now open at Bryden Elementary. If you have a child entering kindergarten in the fall of 2024, please go to the Beachwood Schools registration page. A kindergarten parent orientation is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, from 4 to 5 p.m. at Bryden Elementary School. Kindergarten screening is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, for those who are registered by date this. A link for this screening will be sent out at a later time. Register for Fairmount Summer Camp
Registration is open for the Fairmount summer camp, welcoming children ages 3 (by June 10) to those entering kindergarten (up to age 5). This enriching summer program includes weekly themes, outdoor exploration, guest performances, art, field trips, water play, and more. Highlights include picnics, parades, dance parties, and a carnival with bounce houses and treats. Camp hours vary by age group, with options from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or until 3:00 p.m. For more details or to register, please visit the Fairmount’s summer camp website.
