Brownfields 2023 Opening Plenary:

Julie Bargmann and Philip Kafka

Join us on Tuesday, August 8th at 4:30pm for the Brownfields 2023 EPA Opening Plenary, headlined by Julie Bargmann of D.I.R.T. Studio and Philip Kafka of Price Concepts.

Julie Bargmann is internationally recognized as an innovative designer in building regenerative landscapes. She founded D.I.R.T. studio in 1992 to research, design and build projects with passion and rigor. Born and bred surrounded by refineries and factories, Julie is a straight-talker, not afraid to provoke but doing so to tease out what matters most about places.

Philip Kafka is president of Prince Concepts, which owns and is activating approximately 750,000 square feet of real estate — all contiguous — in downtown Detroit. Prince Concepts acquires property, and — when appropriate — designs programming around the people and properties discovered along the way. Projects include managing the design and development of Takoi restaurant on Michigan Avenue, and the development of True North apartments.

Free Training Workshops at Brownfields 2023

Brownfields University returns as our foundational pre-conference training program for Brownfields 2023. It will provide a curriculum of core brownfield concepts and practices to prepare attendees for the full educational program content.

This year's courses include Are You “Revitalization-Ready”?, where participants will learn how to position a property for reuse and prepare a brownfields investment package to attract public and private investment,

Big Maps, Big Ideas, Big Impact, in which attendees will learn to utilize Storymaps and other tools to achieve a variety of community objectives, and more!

Brownfields University provides valuable hands-on learning and engagement for emerging brownfield practitioners and seasoned professionals alike. Attendees will be better prepared to select educational sessions to attend, and better prepared to engage presenters and exhibitors with freshly informed understanding of subjects covered throughout the conference.

Brownfields University does not require an additional fee, but pre-registration is required.
