Press Release:

The still-stagnant U.S. economy is hurting dogs and cats as well as humans in Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Animal Foster Network (BAFN) is suffering the double whammy of decreased donations and increased need, as more people give up pets they can no longer afford to keep.
The long-standing BAFN with a network of more than 900 foster homes in Brooklyn has had to scale back their work and is still struggling to stay afloat.
BAFN, a nonprofit outfit that has rescued more than 2,500 abandoned and stray dogs and cats since 2005, has reduced the number of animals it takes in because it can't afford to maintain them. Its budget has dropped by about 70% since the recession.
"Donations have dropped so sharply this year and, if they don't pick up, the agency, will just have to shut down, said Fran Grimaldi, development manager. "And Kitten Season is right around the corner" she sighed.
BAFN launched an emergency campaign today to raise about half its annual expenses at Indiegogo.com.

"The next 30 days are "critical" to the lives of countless kittens this spring and summer." says Laurie Bleier, Founder and Director of BAFN. The network charges adoption fees, but the cost of maintaining the animals exceeds the fees fivefold, and the agency is dependent on fundraisers, grants and donations.
"But if the network closes, many of those animals "won't have that second chance," says Kathy Kalachi, BAFN Foster Manager.
Like many such operations, the rescue group is run entirely by volunteers who transport dogs and screen prospective adopters. It has no office or bricks-and-mortar facility - and conducts most of its home-placement work online. But expenses still are steep, including veterinarian fees that can range from $450 to $600 per cat or dog, or more for those that need extraordinary veterinary care.
"The growing expenses," Bleier wrote in a group plea mail last month, "have literally wiped out all of our funds."
"It is with a heavy heart, many tears and great desperation that I write ... BAFN is weeks, if not days, away from closing its doors," she wrote. "We are no longer able to take dogs or cats into rescue and are praying that we can even cover the vet bills for the animals we currently have in rescue."
Since that plea, some donations have come in, Bleier said. But the situation remains touch-and-go. "We're taking the next 30 days to sit back and figure out what we need to do," Bleier said. "We're just praying that people get the word out by posting or forwarding this plea."
"I don't know many people who can work so diligently at an endeavor that can be so heartbreaking at times, but Laurie and BAFN can, and she makes a difference every day." says Julie of Park Slope.

BEYOND URGENT
2 cats need temporary fostering:
From the owner:Hi,
About two summers ago, I fostered cats for the Brooklyn Animal Foster Network. You called me your "go to". I adopted my last foster cats, named Grey & Orange (pics attached).
Problem: I'm moving back home. My mother said, "No cats."
Until I get a new place (about 4-6 months), I need a foster home for my pets. I've looked into boarding, but its too expensive.
I'm moving within the week. I can board them short-term. If BAFN can't help, I'll have to give them up and HOPE I can get them back.
To support your cause (and because I love my cats), I can donate food, litter, litter boxes - enough for 30 cats (not all at once). I'm also a writer. I studied technical writing/specialized journalism for two years at Polytechnic University. I happily volunteer my services.
I hope you can help, Ayana cell# 917-474-1910

URGENT TIME SENSITIVE
Julia From her advocate:
Julia is a deaf dogo. I had spoken to you and Laurie about her in February. She is neutered, young, great temperament with other dogs. Plays right now with a golden retriever that has a missing paw.
She was found in the forest (the same one Minnie was in), burnt and with bad mange as you see from the photos. She was cared for at the shelter (expenses assumed by a volunteer), and has since been in a private pension where she lives with other dogs. The same volunteer is also supporting her in the pension.
 | | Juiia After | Would you want to take her with Minnie? When I come, I can bring two dogs. Best, nancy

Urgent! Time sensitive. Molly's barking has forced owner to give her up. Stay-at-home or working owner would be perfect happy ending.
 | | Molly a 7 year old terrier mix. |
From Molly's Owner I have a very healthy, 7 year old terrier mix who is 16 lbs. She is very sweet when comfortable with someone and is a complete lap dog at heart. I have had her since she was 6 weeks old but I now face eviction from my apartment due to her barking. I have tried everything: boot camps, technique training and a vibration collar. Nothing works. I can't think about bringing her to a place that would put her down. I currently have her staying at the Dog Spa on the UES but I won't be able to pay the $65 per night much longer.
Please contact me if you have a foster home for her or have any other questions. I am willing to pay fees until she finds a good home if that is an issue.
Molly Bio:
7 year old terrier mix
16 lbs
Up to date on vaccines, micro-chipped, spayed
House trained (weewee pads and outside)
Healthy and energetic, does well with other dogs her size and cats. Very sweet and affectionate, could sit in her owner's lap for hours. Loves running around in the park but is perfectly content with two walks in the morning and evening.
Would do best with a single owner or small family with no children.
Urgent Time Sensitive. Young stunner needs a new home. FROM HER OWNER:

 | Joey a white shepherd mix plucked from death row.
|
From his rescuer: To whom it may concern,
Two weeks ago, I pulled a 46lb 2 year old male shepard mix from the ACC's death row. He had been found tied to a tree outside of the ACC in the Bronx. Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary helped us pull him and we have been fostering him every since.
Hudson Valley's location is all the way in Poughkeepsie- and with out a car- I have no way of getting Joey to their local events. I was hoping to expand the network of people who are able to see Joey as a pup up for adoption. I've included a picture below. Is there a way to get him part of your network while I'm fostering? He's such an incredible dog- I want to see him go to a good family!
