Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers:


Welcome to the community! We are looking forward to upcoming events that will support a smooth transition for staff and students coming to St. John Paul II in the fall. Please save the date in your calendars for the events outlined below in the newsletter.


I look forward to getting to know each of you in the coming months. As a community, St. John Paul II is a great place to be. You and your children will enjoy our welcoming school community.


I know that the events we have planned over the next couple months will allow us to get to know each other so that September 2023 will be a great month filled with joy.

logo Crock A Doodle

Kindergarten - Grade 3 Craft Event

On Friday, April 28, we welcome our new staff and students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 to join existing staff and students of St. John Paul II to a Crock A Doodle event in our gym. Students will paint pottery at this fun craft event. Our students are so excited to make new friends!

St. John Paul II Catholic School Open House

On Thursday, May 4, all families and students are invited to our Open House at St. John Paul II Catholic school, beginning at 5:30 p.m.


Starr Burger (from Whitby) will be here so that you can purchase dinner for your family. We also have an ice cream truck coming, so save room for dessert! Both vendors will be cash only, so please bring enough cash for this event.


Please see the price list below:

  • Combo (includes either a hamburger, a hotdog or a veggie burger, with chips and a drink) - $7.00 per combo


Ice cream truck (also cash only):

  • Small cones or a slushie - $3.00 each
  • Popsicles or a large slushie - $4.00 each
  • Medium cones - $5.00
  • Sundaes, shakes and floats - $6.00
  • Large cones - $7.00
  • Banana split - $9.00


At 7:00 p.m. at the Open House evening, families and students are welcome to tour the school and meet some of our amazing staff members. We are excited to welcome you to the community!

Science

Grade 4-7 Scientists in School Event

On Thursday, May 18, we welcome the staff and students from Grades 4-7 to join with our existing staff and students for a Scientists in School event. Details will be sent to families through School Cash Online.

Save the Date for a School Picnic at Cullen Park

On Thursday, June 15, St. Leo Catholic School and St. John Paul II Catholic School will attend a school picnic at Cullen Park. This is another opportunity for staff and students to get acquainted. Please save the date! More details will come regarding this closer to June.

September 2023 Information

School Year Calendar

Following extensive consultations with families, staff, advisory groups, and communities, a proposed 2023-2024 school year calendar for DCDSB has been shared with the Ministry of Education for approval.


In the proposed calendar, the first day of school is tentatively scheduled to be Tuesday, September 5, 2023.


The final approved 2023-2024 school year calendar will be shared with all families by the beginning of June.


Class Lists

Class lists will be available a few days before school begins. Class lists will be communicated to families via Edsby.

Durham Student Transportation Services

Durham Student Transportation Services (DSTS) is responsible for ensuring safe and efficient transportation to and from school for eligible students in accordance with policy. Visit the DSTS website to view the Transportation Policy. 


For bus information, we encourage families to: 

  • Follow Durham Student Transportation Services on Twitter (@DSTS)
  • Check the alerts on the DSTS website: https://www.dsts.on.ca/
  • Families are encouraged to create an account for the DSTS Parent Portal, where they can subscribe to receive email alerts for their child(ren)’s bus route(s). Please note that parents and guardians will require their child(rens) Ontario Education Number (OEN) to subscribe.
  • DSTS also has a 24-hour automated information phone line, available at 1-866-908-6578 or 905-666-6979. The DSTS main office line can be reached during business hours at 905-666-6395.


Bus route information for the 2023-2024 school year will be available in mid-late August. Route information will be available through the DSTS Parent Portal, or through the 24-hour automated information phone line listed above.

Edsby

Students and families will be added to our Edsby groups at the start of the 2023-2024 school year. Edsby is the main method of communication for our school.
