Broken and Damaged Well Caps

Well caps come in a variety of shapes, configurations, and materials. Older, one-piece caps (top left) often have gaps between the inside of the cap and the well casing, allowing insects and other contaminants to infiltrate the well. Two-piece caps (top right) are recommended as they are more secure against impurity intrusion. In either case, the cap should be properly secured to the well casing. If the securing bolts and/or nuts are loose or missing (as is the case in both pictures), the cap may be loosened or easily removed which allows for impurity intrusion.

Broken and Damaged Conduit

The electrical conduit is what supplies power to a submersible pump within a well. The conduit should be secured to the well cap and extend several inches into the ground to properly protect the electrical wiring. A short conduit allows the wiring to be exposed and allows insects and contaminants to enter the well through the gap. The conduit should be extended and properly secured in these cases. Conduits are also susceptible to damage, which also exposes the wiring. The conduit may need to be replaced by a licensed well driller if the damage is severe.
