Entering Third Year, Anti-Oppression Curriculum Initiative Builds Community and Momentum

The Anti-Oppression Curriculum Initiative (AOCI) team recently marked the second full academic year of the three-year process of evaluation, reflection, and redesign to move the Bridges Curriculum towards an increasingly anti-oppressive approach, in partnership with faculty, students, and staff. The initiative team is led by Denise Connor, MD and is a foundational element of the broader Anti-Oppression Charter, overseen by Associate Dean for Curriculum, John Davis, PhD, MD.

New Teaching Interest Survey and Teaching Opportunities in the Bridges Curriculum Webpage Launched

The UCSF School of Medicine educational community is committed to a broad recruitment for all faculty educators and to increase opportunities for all faculty to help medical students on their paths to becoming physician leaders committed to advancing health for all.


As part of this effort, we recently announced the launch of a new Teaching Interest Survey and a refreshed Teaching Opportunities in the Bridges Curriculum webpage.

Bridges Curriculum Welcomes Curricular Leaders in New or Expanded Roles

Airways, Blood, and Circulation Block Leadership


Binh An Phan, MD, Professor of Medicine, was named Director of the Airways, Blood, and Circulation (ABC) Block. Phan has taken on an expanded role in the course. Sam Brondfield, MD, MA, Associate Professor of Medicine, was recently named an Associate Director of the ABC Block. Dana Rohde, PhD, Professor of Anatomy, continues as the Director and Medical Student Liaison of ABC.


Inquiry Curriculum Leadership


Alan Shindel, MD, MAS, Professor of Urology, will serve as an Inquiry Advisor. The Inquiry Advisor advises students on their independent, mentored scholarship.

Campus Global Health Advisor, Mylo Schaaf, MD Retired Effective October 1


Dr. Mylo Schaaf dedicated most of her UCSF career to global health. Having completed her residency at UCSF, Dr. Schaaf returned to the University in 2011 as Global Health Advisor in the School of Medicine. Her most recent post has been as Senior International Officer and Director of Global Health in the Office of the EVCP.  She worked to provide guidance to UCSF travelers and to ensure that UCSF policies and procedures dealing with issues such as international visitors and affiliations were equitable and respectful of our global partners.


Joe Novotny, director of International Research Support Operations (IRSO), will take on the role of Senior International Officer. In addition, Travis Pentz will be assuming a greater role in counseling students traveling internationally. Within medical education, a search will be conducted for the Inquiry Funding and Global Health Advisor roles previously held by Dr. Schaaf.

Education Continuous Quality Improvement

Student Feedback Informs Changes to Foundations 1 Calendar for 2024-2025 Academic Year 

Student feedback, course evaluations, and faculty and staff input and expertise prompted the most significant structural changes to Foundations 1 since the Bridges Curriculum launched in 2016. Changes to the Foundations 1 schedule are designed to enhance overall student experience and learning and will take place starting in the 2024-2025 academic year. These changes to Foundations 1 will go into effect in August 2024.


The student, faculty, and staff representatives of the F1 Operations Committee worked together to adjust the cadence and timing of F1 to improve the first phase of the Bridges Curriculum for all learners by ensuring more even distribution and pacing of basic science, social science, professional development, and vacation. They also decompressed and relocated certain Foundational Science blocks and content to more evenly distribute content to provide better work-life balance. Examples of this restructure include:

  • Increasing the length of the Ground School/Core Inquiry Curriculum (CIC) block from 5 weeks to 6 weeks 
  • Reducing the length of Airways, Blood, Circulation (ABC) block from 9 weeks to 8 weeks 
  • Restructuring the Health and Society (H&S) and Health and the Individual (H&I) blocks into three 2-week blocks 
  • Adjusting the timing of Physician Identity (PI) Weeks blocks to promote student engagement and learning 
  • Shifting Inquiry Immersion earlier to provide students more time to identify research topics and mentors for the Summer Explore Research Fellowship 

Policy Highlight

New Readiness for Learning Policy Approved

The Committee on Curriculum and Educational Policy recently passed the Readiness for Learning Policy. This new policy supports students, the School, and the Institution in situations where there are questions about a student’s readiness to return to the curriculum or where there may be questions about the student's capacity to either meet our technical standards with or without accommodations or the student’s ability to abide by the student code of conduct policy.

The Academy of Medical Educators Inducts the Class of 2023

On September 13, The Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators hosted its annual Celebration of New Members which honored the incoming Academy Class of 2023 and recognized the contributions of health professions education staff and "front-line" teachers and educators who impact our learners on a regular basis to make UCSF such an outstanding health care institution.

Christine Phung Wins Transition to Residency Coordinator of the Year

Christine Phung, Curriculum Coordinator in Assessment, Curriculum, Evaluations (ACE), was recently honored by the Transition to Residency Course Educators as Coordinator of the Year! Christine was nominated by Dr. Brad Monash, Professor of Clinical Medicine and Pediatrics and Director, Coda and Introduction to Career Launch.


In his nomination, Dr. Monash wrote that Christine exhibits exceptional leadership and management skills, is dedicated to student success, and is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This award is highly competitive, and Christine was selected from nominations from across the country. Congratulations, Christine!
