PORTLAND, OREGON ─ October 25, 2022. KBOO Community Radio is pleased to announce its support for Portland Measure 26-228. The Measure, created by the Portland Charter Commission, will strengthen our democracy by giving Portland voters more voice and more choice in City Council elections and making our government more accountable and responsive to community needs.
The KBOO Board voted to endorse the Measure on October 24th. Board President Emma Lugo said, "Measure 26-228 falls closely in line with KBOO's values of Beloved Community. Just like KBOO Community Radio tries so very hard to do, Measure 26-228 will allow disenfranchised and marginalized voices to seek full democratic accountability in our city's electoral system. In a system which is overwhelmingly skewed to favor white and privileged citizens of Portland, Measure 26-228 opens the door for Black, Indigenous and People of Color candidates in a way that is directly expressive of the will of the voters."
If passed, Measure 26-228 will: 1.) Allow voters to rank candidates in order of preference on the ballot. 2.) Establish city council districts so that our elected officials are accountable to their communities. 3.) Make Portland government more effective and transparent through professional city management.
KBOO joins Portland United for Change, as well as dozens of other civic, business, labor, and community organizations and leaders in endorsing Measure 26-228.
KBOO agrees that our region faces serious challenges, and our current approach to solving them is not working. In the process of developing this measure, thousands of Portlanders shared their concerns with the independent Charter Commission about elections, equitable representation, and Portland’s outdated commission form of government. This November, Measure 26-228 presents a rare opportunity to move forward — together — toward a more hopeful future for all of Portland.
