Celebrating HPN: Mighty Warrior Attack Sheep: Sam Vest!
We are thrilled to feature Sam Vest as our Mighty Warrior this month, celebrating his outstanding contributions to the world of animation and his commitment to fostering a vibrant community of animators.
Sam moved to Southern California from Godfrey, Illinois in 2012. He is a Producer at Sam Vest Studios LLC. and he is the dedicated leader of the HPN Animators group, Inbetweeners. Sam’s love for animation was inspired by Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Sam says “I was a very angsty teenager and the Lord used this film to comfort and inspire me, so I decided to pursue a career in animation."
Sam’s role as the leader of the HPN Animators group, Inbetweeners, has had a significant impact on the animation community. He has provided a platform for animators to collaborate, learn from each other, and grow in their skills.
Favorite Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24! My flesh has a tendency to idolize the material world, which often distresses me so I meditate on this verse and it reminds me to look up to Jesus, who is our real treasure in heaven.
Advice for Christian Creatives in LA?
When things get hard, just look up and pray. God wants to comfort you.
What do you love/ wish everyone knew about HPN?
I adore how supportive and enthusiastic everyone is at HPN. They're my kind of people! This kind of enthusiasm is a testament to the strength of their faith in God.
If you are an animator, Sam would be thrilled to have you join the monthly meetings. Email inbetweeners@hpnemail.org

SAG/AFTRA STRIKE CONTINUES
Although studios and Union members have been in talks for weeks, we ask that you continue to pray for negotiations between SAG/AFTRA and AMPTP. We are over 100 days into the strike, and warnings have been issued by the studios that if the strike keeps up, it will be “impossible to salvage half a season of scripted television”. There have already been huge shifts to the 2024 slates of film & TV releases, with more and more films and TV shows being pushed back to 2025! Please be praying for a fair outcome, and for provision for striking actors and the thousands of industry professionals who haven’t worked for months!

ISRAEL/HAMAS WAR
In our last call sheet, we asked for prayer for Israel after the horrific attacks of Hamas on October 7th. We want to clarify that it is our heart for ALL people to be prayed for, and for ALL innocent lives lost to be mourned. The violent acts of Hamas in Israel and Palestine is heart-wrenching, and our point was that we want to urge all believers to PRAY for peace in Israel, not that one life means more than another! We will continue to pray for the violence stop.
Let’s also pray for journalists who are a focus of attacks, regardless of what they are reporting. We pray for more consideration for the people doing their best to do their jobs and trying to survive. And let's pray for truthful sourcing and reporting as we seek God to intervene in a miraculous way!

CELEBRATE CHRISTIAN CREATIVES
We are so excited about the incredible talent in our Christian community, so we want to praise God for two new works by HPN members. A new play just opened at The Actor’s Co-Op in Hollywood called “Lewis & Tolkien.” It’s written and directed by our very own HPN Board Chair Dean Batali and it’s a beautiful and important work for our city. We highly recommend you scroll down to the bottom of this email and purchase tickets! This play is about C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, the Inklings, and their contribution to our world.

Angel Studios' AFTER DEATH
Also, we just saw a new documentary film “After Death” about near-death experiences. It’s currently playing in limited theaters across the country and Christians need to see it with a pre-Christian friend and then have a conversation afterwards about life after death, good and evil, and all of the big questions in life that this film addresses. The film was scored by an HPN member, Hannah Parrott, and we are proud of her and her excellent work. So, go see this play and this film and praise God for the incredible talent He has given our Hollywood community.

MATTHEW PERRY
As the world mourns the death of actor Matthew Perry, we want to remember and celebrate Matthew as a man who loved God, and had a complicated, yet meaningful relationship with a forgiving and loving heavenly father. In his book “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing”, Perry writes about his encounter with Jesus, and his life-long “struggles with God”. Watching his interviews in recent years, it’s clear that Matthew sought to please the Lord, even through his struggles with substance-abuse. Let us all continue to pray for and support those around us whom we see struggling! We are certain that Matthew is now in heaven; pain-free, addiction-free, and full of joy to live out wholly who he is and has always been. Pray for Matthew's family and friends who are mourning their loss, to find comfort in Jesus. He will be missed!

ANIMATOR SHORTAGES IN THE ANIME WORLD
Let's be praying for the issue of animator shortages in the vast world of Anime. In a recent interview with Japanese filmmaker Yoshihara Masayuki, director of the new Anime film “Komada”, Masayuki brings up the issue of animator shortages. This summer, a New York Times Article addressed this issue, stating that it is due to lack of pay and working conditions. Without the protection of unions, many animators are forced to use their gifts to create content for an ever-consuming market, while living in poverty. We pray for God to invade the stories, people, and projects that work within the world of Anime, and bring revival to that industry in powerful ways!

|
BRADLEY COOPER
We want to lift up accomplished actor Bradley Cooper, who plays the brilliant composer Leonard Bernstein in an upcoming bio-pic, Maestro. Bradley has previously shared that he is of a Catholic faith, and was brought up in a Christian household. We pray that as Bradley is once again thrust back into the limelight for this film, that he will lean into the truth of who God is, and know that his value is found in Christ alone, and not in the accolades and praise of men!

MENTAL HEALTH IN HOLLYWOOD
There has been a meeting of Hollywood entertainment celebrities at the White House, asking for our government to support the cause of dealing with mental health in Hollywood. Artists and entertainment professionals have a higher percentage of mental health issues, for many reasons, but primarily because they have to feel more deeply to be effective in their work. We ask that you pray with us to get solutions for the mental health issues in Hollywood and for the Lord to reveal the needs and His solution!
| | |
|
Thank you so much for praying with us, and having faith that God will hear our prayers, and continue to bring revival, relationships, and salvation to the lives of industry professionals in Hollywood! The power of Prayer is undeniable, and we want to keep showing the world that we are a community that embraces people in Hollywood, wherever they are at, and has compassion for all people here, while God is doing His transformative work! Keep on praying!
Love,
Karen, Kelry, and Myesha

“Submit to death, death of your ambitions and favorite wishes every day and death of your whole body in the end: submit with every fiber of your being, and you will find eternal life. Keep back nothing. Nothing that you have not given away will be really yours. Nothing in you that has not died will ever be raised from the dead. . . look to Christ and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in.”
― C.S. Lewis

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: WATCH FULL EPISODE HERE!
Our special guest on the ChangeMakers Podcast this week is Producer Carrie Certa and Pastor Dave Stambaugh. Carrie talks about showing up in Dave's church with great reservations about going to church and feeling right at home the moment he started preaching about "Star Trek" in his sermon. The use of pop culture in his sermons is what made her stay, learn, and grow in her faith. Hear their incredible conversation about TV, film and God, all because Pastor Dave analyzed television from the pulpit.
