Community Foundation Hires New Administrative Assistant
The Charlevoix County Community Foundation (C3F) continues to expand their programs and services, aided by the selection of Bekah Rutz as the organization’s new Administrative Assistant.

Bekah brings with her a broad and varied work and educational background with experience in event planning, volunteer coordination, administration, and even organic gardening. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs and a Certificate in Sustainable Business Management from the University of Cambridge.

“Bekah is going to be a great addition to our dynamic staff.” said Sara Ward, President of the Community Foundation. “As C3F continues to grow, Bekah’s diverse background and blend of skills in administration, communications, and nonprofit coordination make her exceptionally qualified to take on this role with vigor. We can’t wait to see what she will bring to our team!”

Raised in Colorado Springs, CO, Bekah relocated to Michigan in 2017 and decided to make Charlevoix County her home in 2021. With a passion for nonprofit work and a community minded spirit, she is excited to join the C3F team. “As a lifelong volunteer, I understand well the connection between nonprofit programs and community vibrancy,” shares Bekah, “and I’m looking forward to being part of the Community Foundation’s mission to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of Charlevoix County, now and for generations to come.” Bekah’s first day was May 13th, and she is off to a great start.

The Charlevoix County Community Foundation is a grassroots charitable organization made up of various funds – all of them established by local donors. Some funds are earmarked for specific causes, and others are open-ended to meet changing needs. The funds are held in permanent endowment, so they can continue to grow and generate income to enhance the quality of life in Charlevoix County. The Community Foundation has made grants totaling more than $30 million to local nonprofits, schools, and municipalities since it began in 1992.

More information about the Community Foundation is available by calling (231) 536-2440, or visiting the organization’s website, www.c3f.org.

Work-Based Learning, aka ‘co-op:’
Students earn income, high school credits, and can pursue their dreams as they work toward graduation

One local senior has been working on welding a pontoon boat in Cheboygan. Another shadowed at the 33rd Circuit Court, interested in pursuing a law career while working on clerical and court-related tasks. A third senior, interested in a career in accounting, has learned bookkeeping skills at Irish Boat Shop.
These students are among 21 from throughout Char-Em ISD who are benefitting from the reboot of “co-op” - the opportunity for students to work part time during the school day to earn income and school credits toward graduation at the same time. Co-op is also known as “work-based learning,” which describes exactly what these students are doing to help prepare them for life after graduation.

“I gained extensive knowledge of workplace culture,” said Ben Matter, the accounting senior from Charlevoix High School. “Connecting my school learning with on the job experiences helped me see the classwork pay off. It was a great experience, helping me deepen my knowledge of both accounting and business processes.”
JMG Specialists help pair the students with employers, which could be difficult for a student and their family to arrange on their own.

🐕︎ Pet of the Week 🐈︎
Hey Siri- oh wait, I'm Siri... I am a Chihuahua mix of sorts but do not worry... I am the sweetest "chihuahua" you will ever meet. I can be timid with strangers upon first meeting, but give me a few treats and that'll change quickly. I hope you don’t mind if I hop up in your lap for kisses and cuddles, because I can’t get enough! Those furry things the humans call cats can be a little scary, and I can occasionally be selective about the dogs I hang out with. Stop by and say hello, I would love to be your new best friend
