The Boyne City Police Department had another great turnout on Wednesday for the annual Bike To School Day, their favorite event of the year. This event began in 2014 to complement the bike safety lesson police officers continue to present to Boyne City 4th graders. As part of that lesson each student is provided a new bike helmet, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor with assistance from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation. City drops library housing project, will continue to consider Lofts on Lake
The City Commission decided on Tuesday to not support a project to provide apartment housing on a city-owned parking lot next to the Boyne District Library at the corner of Ray and Park Streets. The decision came near the end of a five-hour meeting that included comments from more than 20 citizens in a standing-room-only crowd. Losing the use of the parking lot was a major complaint of those opposing the project. Project supporters emphasized the need for affordable housing in the community.
Commission members said they will continue to consider a four-story Lofts on Lake project proposed by Michigan Community Capital. This project would include 57 apartments and commercial space. Commissioners feel further negotiations are needed, specifically on the proposed use of angle parking on Lake and State Street, and the tax increment financing (TIF) plan.
In other action Tuesday, the Commission:
-
Approved a proposal from the Fourth of July Committee to raise funds by conducting a sealed bid process for up to 50 people to use the City Hall patio and Commission Chambers to view the fireworks. The committee has a goal of raising $60,000 for this year’s fireworks and other celebration events.
-
Decided to apply for a $200,000 state grant to pay for extending sidewalks on State Street to Rotary Park and on Boyne Avenue from Beardsley to Moll Street.
-
Approved a request to pay $1,845 towards additional printing and mailing Master Plan survey postcards.
PAVEMENT MARKING BIDS - Sealed bids are now being accepted by the City of Boyne City for our 2024 Pavement Marking Services. Bids will be received in a clearly marked envelope labeled “Pavement Marking Services”, until 1 P.M., June 3, at Boyne City Hall, 319 North Lake Street, at which time they shall be opened and read. Complete specifications (including map & inventory) can be found here.
MASTER PLAN SURVEY - The City of Boyne City is updating its Community Master Plan and needs your help! We have already received more than 900 responses, and your input will help City leaders plan for Boyne City’s future. Click here to complete the survey. Work-Based Learning, aka ‘co-op:’
Students earn income, high school credits, and can pursue their dreams as they work toward graduation
One local senior has been working on welding a pontoon boat in Cheboygan. Another shadowed at the 33rd Circuit Court, interested in pursuing a law career while working on clerical and court-related tasks. A third senior, interested in a career in accounting, has learned bookkeeping skills at Irish Boat Shop.
These students are among 21 from throughout Char-Em ISD who are benefitting from the reboot of “co-op” - the opportunity for students to work part time during the school day to earn income and school credits toward graduation at the same time. Co-op is also known as “work-based learning,” which describes exactly what these students are doing to help prepare them for life after graduation.
“I gained extensive knowledge of workplace culture,” said Ben Matter, the accounting senior from Charlevoix High School. “Connecting my school learning with on the job experiences helped me see the classwork pay off. It was a great experience, helping me deepen my knowledge of both accounting and business processes.”
JMG Specialists help pair the students with employers, which could be difficult for a student and their family to arrange on their own.

Munson Healthcare Prepares for Higher Summer Patient Volumes, Reminds People Where to Go for Care
Traverse City, Mich. – Northern Michigan is recognized nationally as a summer tourist destination which means a bump in population of 42 percent or more and increased demand for healthcare services across the area Munson Healthcare serves.
While more and more patients are seeking out virtual care options, many continue to use emergency rooms as the “front door” to receive care. However, there are many care options available to residents and vacationers but it’s important to know where to go for quality care based on severity, symptoms, and convenience.
“Our goal is to make sure that people get the right care, in the right place, at the right time,” said Munson Healthcare Chief Quality and Safety Officer, Joe Santangelo, M.D. “Emergency Departments (EDs) prioritize care for life-threatening conditions that may require medical, surgical, or psychiatric care. If you come to one of our EDs, we’ll take care of you. But many patients in our ED waiting rooms could receive the care they need through a different avenue that may have shorter wait times and be more convenient.”
Summer is the most common season for injuries. Whether a bee sting or a watersport accident, fun in the sun unfortunately increases our risk for accidents, insect bites, and other unexpected injuries.
Munson Healthcare reminds Northern Michigan residents of the diverse options available for care this summer:
-
Ask-A-Nurse: Munson Healthcare’s free Ask-A-Nurse line is staffed by Registered Nurses who can offer direction on the best place to seek care based on their symptoms. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week at 231-935-0951. Since launching in 2020, Ask-A-Nurse has completed more than 150,000 calls.
-
Primary Care: For local residents with non-life-threatening concerns, a primary care provider should be the first stop. Many provider offices now offer same-day appointments and on-call services, as well as weekend and virtual appointments. Contact your local provider for availability.
-
Virtual Urgent Care: Virtual Urgent Care is most appropriate for things such as abrasions, allergies, cold, cough, diarrhea, flu, insect bites, sore throat, sprains and strains, sinus infections, and more. To find out if virtual urgent care is an option, call 231-935-4995 or visit: munsonhealthcare.org/virtualvisits. Since launching this service one year ago, Munson Virtual Urgent Care has received nearly 7,000 patient visits.
-
In-Person Urgent Care/Walk-in Clinics: For those visiting the region or residents whose primary care provider is unavailable, urgent care, or walk-in clinics can treat:
- Allergic reactions
- Asthma symptoms that are not responding to medicine
- Cuts that do not involve much blood but need stitches
- Earaches, fevers, moderate-to-severe sore throats and cough
- Minor fractures sprains, strains, and more.
-
Emergency Department: Any time a life-threatening condition exists, that may require medical, surgical, or psychiatric care, people should immediately call 9-1-1. Among the many conditions that merit emergency room care:
- Chest or left arm pain
- Shortness of breath
- Stroke symptoms such as slurred speech, double vision, or weakness on one side of the body
- Coughing or vomiting blood
- Loss of consciousness
- Traumatic injuries
- Severe burns
- Severe pain
- Seizures
Dr. Santangelo emphasizes that anyone suffering a heart attack, stroke, or traumatic injury should call 911 and seek Emergency Care immediately.
However, many people can find timely, convenient care in primary care offices or virtual visits, walk-in clinics, urgent care, or virtual urgent care.
“To ensure that our residents and visitors have the best care experience, it is important to choose the right place based on your health concern. The goal is to always provide the most timely, convenient, highest-quality care so you can get back to enjoying all that Pure Michigan summers have to offer,” said Santangelo.
About Munson Healthcare
