Planning Commission approves revised Lofts on Lake project
The Planning Commission met Monday and approved a revised proposal from Michigan Community Capital for the Lofts on Lake mixed use project at 100 North Lake Street. The revised plan increased the number of floors from 3 to 4, and increased the total number of apartments to 57, which include 9 studio units, 27 one-bedroom units, 18 two-bedroom units and 3 three-bedroom units. The first floor would now have 7,909 sq ft of retail lease space. The proposed project would include the development of 63 off-street private parking spaces and 24 on-street public parking for a total of 87 new parking spaces. The next step in the process will be consideration by the City Commission.
The Planning Commission also held a pre-application discussion of a possible food truck court adjacent to the car wash on Ray Street. Because this is the first time that a proposal has been received for the operation of several food trucks in a permanent space developed for that purpose, the Commission directed Planning Director Scott McPherson to research and propose changes to the applicable city ordinance regulating outdoor cafes and outdoor eating areas.

Sustainable Style: Challenge Mountain Resale Store's Commitment to EARTH DAY, EVERY DAY
Boyne City, MI | April 2024 — The fashion industry churns out a staggering 100 billion garments annually with a whopping 92 million metric tons ending up in landfills, according to data from earth.org. This translates to the alarming rate of clothing being dumped into landfills every second.
When pondering the sustainability of purchasing gently used clothing from Challenge Mountain Resale Store, rest assured that you're significantly decreasing your carbon footprint. In fact, research from ecocart.io indicates that opting for second-hand items slashes carbon emissions and “reduces the carbon footprint by 82%.”
But it's not just about clothing. By supporting the Challenge Mountain Resale Store, you're diverting household goods, furniture, sporting equipment, tools, and more from landfills. This further diminishes our collective environmental impact in everyday life.
“One of my favorite aspects of working at Challenge Mountain Resale Store is the circle of life for our merchandise,” expresses Alaina Farrington, Assistant Resale Store Manager. “Items that may otherwise end up in a landfill are donated to our store, sorted and then displayed on our sales floor to find new homes and purposes. Not only do sales help to provide adaptive recreation to our wonderful participants, the Resale Store provides a safe place for our volunteers to donate their time, giving them a sense of pride while forming lifelong friendships with other volunteers,” she adds.
Each purchase and donation directly contributes to enriching the lives of an expanding circle of children, youth and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities through adaptive recreation. “From adaptive skiing and biking to nature experiences and vibrant arts programs, participants derive immense benefits from these activities," emphasizes Executive Director Elizabeth Gertz.
"Reflecting on Earth Day 2024, take a moment to appreciate the impact of your support for Challenge Mountain Resale Store," encourages Gertz. “The Challenge Mountain Resale Store is more than just great thrifting—it is a vital funding source for Challenge Mountain adaptive programs.”
Discover more about Challenge Mountain by visiting challengemtn.org or contacting the Resale Store at 231.582.6966. Shop Monday thru Saturday, from 9:30am to 5:30pm. Gently used donations are accepted from 9:30am on Tuesdays and Fridays. Find the Resale Store at 1100 Boyne Avenue, Boyne City, MI 49712.

Protecting Children and Infants
HDNW invites all to make a difference during National Infant Immunization Week
National Infant Immunization Week is more than a health observance. It’s a priority. With measles – once eliminated in the United States by vaccination – making a comeback, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) and Northern Michigan Public Health Alliance urges residents to get their children vaccinated.
On average, nearly one in five unvaccinated people in the United States who get measles need to be hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions. In a recent outbreak in Ohio, more than 40% of infants and children infected with measles were hospitalized.
“Giving children and infants the recommended vaccines is the best way to protect them from serious childhood diseases like measles and whooping cough, also known as pertussis,” says Dan Thorell, HDNW Health Officer. “A moment of discomfort ends up providing prolonged protection for children and our communities from infectious diseases.”
National Infant Immunization Week, which runs from April 22-29, highlights the importance of protecting children two years and younger from vaccine-preventable diseases. Routine vaccinations protect again these 14 diseases:
· Polio
· Tetanus
· Flu
· Hepatitis A and B
· Measles, Mumps and Rubella (one vaccine)
· Hib
· Whooping Cough
· Pneumococcal
· Rotavirus
· Chickenpox
· Diphtheria
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), childhood vaccination is important because it helps provide immunity before babies and children are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases. Many infants and kids are behind on routine vaccinations, which puts them and others at risk.
“Infants and children have developing immune systems that can fight off germs they encounter daily through food, air, or on objects,” says Joshua Meyerson, HDNW Medical Director. “However, some diseases require a more robust immune response to prevent severe illness, making childhood vaccination highly effective because it is scheduled for when the child’s immune system learns the most from the vaccine.”
For an easy reference on infant and child immunizations and when they should be given, see https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/parents/diseases/forgot-14-diseases.html. If you are unsure of whether your child has missed any shots, please reach out to your primary care provider or HDNW at 800-432-4121. HDNW uses a variety of programs and bills most insurances to offer free vaccines to families. No one will be turned away due to the inability to pay.

Boyne City High School’s
SPONSOR -A-SENIOR Basket Project
Who:
Anyone can “SPONSOR-A-SENIOR” - Friends, teachers, local business owners, neighbors, grandparents, coaches, BCHS Alumni, parents and siblings are welcome to participate! You can choose to be anonymous, or let your senior know who you are at the basket reveal time. We will NOT be sharing sponsor names with the student—BUT YOU CAN (but not before the basket is given to your senior)!! We will not sponsor a student to their own family members.
What:
Once you tell us that you are willing to sponsor a senior, we will provide you with a student name, along with a basket and a Class of 2024 student survey with their likes/dislikes. You will then fill the basket with fun goodies (as an individual/family/ neighborhood/co-workers/friends-it’s up to you!) for your senior to enjoy. The survey provided will give you a glimpse of the seniors' likes and dislikes. There will not be any restrictions as to what can be placed in the baskets, or what dollar amount can be spent (on average, last year’s baskets were valued at roughly $100 each). We have been doing his project since 2020, and have had AMAZING results since. Our students were very thankful and surprised with the generosity of our hometown!
Where:
This project is multi-functional. Yes, we want the seniors to be gifted with a great basket filled with fun things from the community, but it’s also a fun way to bring a little bit of BOYNE PRIDE back into the local economy!
When:
The deadline for basket delivery to Megan Neidhamer or Erin Zucker will be Thursday, May 23, 2024. Baskets will be picked up by the Class of 2024 before graduation. We will have seniors pick up the baskets from BCHS during Graduation Rehearsal on Friday, May 31st.
Why:
To spread joy and love to the Boyne City Class of 2024! Get creative, have fun, think outside-the-box. It’s up to you! If you need ideas, please contact us, our info is below!
TO SPONSOR A SENIOR:
E-Mail Megan Neidhamer @ mneidhamer@boyne.k12.mi.us your name and best phone number to reach you at in the email. Also include the name of the BCHS senior you are wanting to sponsor, if you are wanting to sponsor a specific senior. (You may or may not be granted your first choice). If you are wanting to sponsor a specific gendered student, please let us know that as well! We can also pair you with a student who shares the same hobbies and interests as you!
Our goal is to have EVERY BCHS graduating senior to be sponsored. We will not leave anyone out. If you are wanting to donate to the cause, but don’t wish to sponsor a senior, donations will be accepted to the project coordinator, Megan Neidhamer, via the following ways:
PayPal: mneidhamer@yahoo.com
Venmo: @MeganNeid
CashApp: $MeganNeidhamer
Cash/Checks to The BCHS Athletic Office will also be accepted.
**All donations will be used for the BCHS Senior Class SPONSOR A SENIOR project, the class of 2024 Graduation and future BCHS class of 2024 events**
Questions can be directed to:
Megan Neidhamer mneidhamer@boyne.k12.mi.us, 231 330-3737

This little cutie is Snowball. Snowball is considered a special needs dog as she is totally deaf, but she doesn't let a little thing like that get in her way! Snowball is full of spunky sweetness and has wonderful manners. Snowball was originally adopted from us several years ago but was found running as a stray in another county and was never picked up. After that Snowball found herself back at CAHS in search of a lasting forever home. Snowball is a bit cautious of other dogs and we think she would be fine with cats. She is also house trained. Open your home to this little lady and we promise she will warm your heart!
