Hello from Ely and the edge of the Boundary Waters.

It has been an up and down week with warm sunny days and some thunderstorm activity and believe it or not some very high wind and tornado warnings. Reportedly, South of us, there was baseball sized hail. It fell in quarter sized balls on the shores of White Iron Lake and filled the Walmart Parking lot in Mt. Iron with so many small, cold white stones that it looked like a couple of inches of snow.

The rain has warmed up the lakes as well as brought the state of Minnesota out of our drought status. As a result the Walleye, Smallmouth and Northern Pike are all more active and shifting from shallow to stack up down a bit. Smallmouth are still hitting on topwater though as usual when they aren't in the faster current. With the Bass and Walleye moving out of warmer waters, the panfish are moving in and attracting anglers and Pike on the hunt.

Bright Spring colors like Pink, Orange and Chartreuse as well as the darkest colors like black, purple or blue are doing well. Minnows, leeches are go-tos now and the artificial baits that replicate them. Silver and gold spinners and spoons will cause Walleye, Smallmouth Bass and Pike to hit agressively. (This is why Mepps Spinners are always a go to lure for the BWCAW -- for more on this re-visit our fishing tips blog).

We can't stress more that the need for head nets, bug dope and bug shirts is at a season high. Please don't take this lightly, but if you forget to prepare ahead of time you can visit our retail store and get what you need. Original Bug Shirts are flying off the shelves faster than more blackflies can be born.

Wear your PFDs, don't take chances with high, fast moving water or flood conditions when driving or paddling. Don't be in a hurry!

It is a fantastic Spring to be in the Boundary Waters.

As Always, be Bear Aware

As you know, the Forest Service has instituted some new rules about handling food, etc. in the Boundary Waters in relation to Black Bears. In light of this change we have some new gear and old gear in place for both rent and purchase. To organize gear online easier we've created a new Bear Aware gear category.

Here is the order on the Superior National Forest site:

Couldn't have a better customer service experience if it wasn't because of Elyse, very attentive and helpful, went to look everywhere just to help one costumer. Thanks

Great place to stop for any gear you may have forgotten before a trip to the BWCA.

Lines from the Boundary Waters

Ready for Anything

There’s an ache

in my right wrist from

paddling into the sun all day

I suppose.

In the small of my back during the night, I must

have finally come to rest in the dark

on a root

because it feels like it could be there still.

But the canoes,

they soak up the first of the bright morning’s color.

Ready for anything

before the blues become themselves.

Between set and rise,

these vessels of time travel

erase any moment

that might be painted over with uncertainty overnight.

Here, they wait for us.

Only lacking our desire to propel.

There, between my toes, is clay -- this land, this campsite

from underneath the sand down at the shore —

where yesterday after arriving

I sank slowly into this place

like Dad used to

into his old recliner.

The waves lapping up against the granite

and the sand, over my feet with the cold

strength of

what if.

What if I'm ready for anything?

Call Tyler for Repairs, he's got some open Shop Days available before it begins to get busy this Summer

"Tyler did a great job on my older Champlain. During a Spring windstorm in Ely, a branch came off a maple in my front yard and went right through my foam core. It tore a pretty big hole and Tyler got me on the water again in short order. I'd trust his experience for any repair!"
