What Happened this Week?
TV Advertising drove the top transfers and donations this week.
The largest transfer occurred Thursday, July 28th when the
Illinois Republican Party transferred
$500,000
to the
House Republican Organization
. That group then transferred
$133,000
to
Rep. Michael McAuliffe's committee
on Friday, July 29th, making that the second largest transfer of the week. McAuliffe began running ads in Chicago markets
on Monday
, including
10 spots on WGN for over $1,300 each
.
The
House Republican Organization also spent
just over $20,000 on TV Advertising for
Dale Severin, making this
the largest donation received by a General Assembly Candidate this week. Severin is challenging
Rep. John Bradley, who started a two-week cable ad campaign in the 117th District
on Monday, August 1st.
The honor of highest-earning County Board Chairman for this week goes to Mark Kern. Kern, the incumbent in St. Clair County, spent nearly
$100,000
on in-kind donations for TV ads in the St. Louis area
. Kern is running for reelection in November against
Rodger Cook
, but his most outspoken political rival in recent years has been radio personality Bob Romanik.
Romanik, a Republican candidate for State Representative in the 114th District, paid for controversial billboards last year that showed Kern's head on a bikini model's body.
Romanik's candidate committee currently shows over $2 million in cash on hand, and is completely self-funded.
This rather
unique
political rivalry has continued into this election cycle.
Kern told the Belleville News-Democrat
he needs to spend on ads to combat the airtime Cook has received on Romanik's show
,
in which he describes himself
as
"The Grim Reaper of Radio."
