GREETINGS FROM NEW MEXICO! After all the craziness of the St. Anne Novena and feast day, I wanted to get away for a bit so I picked a spot on the US Map I had not yet visited… and took a flight to Albuquerque. I am staying as what can best be described as a “roach motel” (it’s cheap and was something I could afford). The hotel reminded me of the places where I lived in Mexico - great families, HUGE cockroaches!!!
Mostly on this trip I was dedicated to resting and recharging the batteries, so to speak. That said, I made sure I took a few days to go out and see the religious sights of the area. Shortly after my arrival in Albuquerque, I drove to Santa Fe (about an hour or so drive from Albuquerque) and visited the Basilica of St. Francis; I also visited the CHAPEL OF LORETTO and the miraculous staircase, a chapel that a previous bishop closed. A for-profit organization keeps the building open for tours.
I decided to light a series of candles and prayed for all the good people I serve, including (but not limited to) the parishioners of St. Patrick’s in Momence, St. Anne’s in St. Anne, IL, the Camino y Esperanza Retreat House, the Poor Clare Sisters of the Annunciation Monastery in Minooka, the faculty, staff and students of the University of St. Francis, Joliet as well as all our friends, families and benefactors. To learn a little more about the Miraculous Stairwell and the Chapel of Loretto, CLICK HERE!!!
In my journeys through New Mexico, I also knew I was going to stop at the SANCTUARIO DE CHIMAYÓ because this is a very sacred land and place of worship for the indigenous, Latin American immigrants, and even the Vietnamese community. Some of the miracles that have taken place on this land in the presence of God during times of trial, especially in the early years of this frontiers formation are well known in the area. I thought about how these same types of healings took place at the St. Anne Novena during the last 144 years.
I was blessed enough to show up in time that I could attend the 11:00 a.m. Mass in the chapel of Chimayó with a bunch of the faithful from the area. I also had an opportunity to spend a good amount of time with some of the tourists in the area, blessing their religious articles and sharing stories about our lives.
The thing that struck me the most was that different prayer spaces are adorned with pictures of those around the world who have asked for prayers. I know in the parishes I serve there are many people who pray for their loved ones and people in the community. Just to see the enormous amount of pictures that adore these prayer spaces , remind me how we turn to God during these times so that God can lead us and guide us. We may not get our problems solved the way we want them, but we certainly know that we are not alone in our journey.
My tour ended at Blake’s Lotaburger because I want to know what a Lotaburger actually was! To learn a little more about the Sanctuary of Chimayó, I also learned a lot about the junk food locations in New Mexico, like Del Taco Restaurants (NM's version of "Taco Bell"). I also had to stop at Fuddruckers and Waffle House because... what is a visit to the southwest without a Fuddruckers and Waflel House? To learn about the Shrine at Chimayó, CLICK HERE!!!
My travels on August 4 took me to the NW part of Albuquerque and the oldest church of the area, St. Philip Neri (est. 1706). I was greeted at the door by two Knights of Columbus, who also serve as ushers at the parish.
I went to the Spanish Mass where the Kenyan priest made me feel better about my language skills after praying with him.
I also stopped by the Balloon Festival Office, where Mary Jo & Bailey Boicken told me about the balloon festival they hold in October (like the university would let me leave for “balloon fest.”
Later in the day, I promised Mother Maria Benedicta from the Poor Clares in Minooka that I would visit her mother Theresa Murphy, who lives in Albuquerque. I was asked to hear the mother’s confession in Latin. Just like last Sunday's gospel from John… just when you try to run away, people keep finding you!!! So goes the life of a priest.
The last stop on this journey was to visit a former parishioner and student from one of the schools I used to serve in Joliet. Carlos Lockwood and I caught up at Church Street Cafe for a little catch up and social time!
I think I'm ready to come back but I was very blessed that I had time to get away and visit some people and places that are very important in the life of the faith!
I also wish to thank Fr. John Horan for covering the funeral Mass of Francis "Frank" Matthew Fontaine at St. Patrick’s on Wednesday, August 7th at 11:00 a.m. When I return, I will be greeted on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with a three-year-old presentation, a 10:00 funeral for John James "Jack" Reyling at Patrick's as well, a 12:00 noon baptism, a 2:00 p.m. Quinceañera for Carolina Perez-Cruz and the 4:00 p.m. Mass. Since this is the week of the Gladiolus Festival in Momence, I also make my annual trip to Ron & Judy Gall’s house, carrying a bunch of bratwursts that the Knights of Columbus Council from Momence will be selling that day on site (hint hint) to Ron Gall, who served the Knights faithfully for the last few decades; the least we can do is take care of Ron and Judy (who not only cares for her husband but also takes care of our funeral luncheons, including one on Saturday afternoon). I'll need another vacation after all the Saturday services!

On Tuesday – August 13, we will be taking a bus to Joliet at 4:30 p.m. for our second annual “Birthday Baseball with Fr. Pete.” This very low-key event will take us to a Joliet Slammers Baseball game where last year a really nice time was had by all. If you are interested in going, feel free to contact the parish office at (815) 472-2864. Tickets and the bus ride are $10 eachy, which is a really nice price for those on a budget. Servers go for free as our way of saying “thank you” for their ministry to the parish!
GREETING CARDS NOW ON SALE
Thanks to Jim Studer and Fast Printing of Joliet, IL we were able to reproduce those nice watercolor images of St. Patrick’s and St. Anne’s, turning them into greeting cards for our Border Town Parishes! Mass for the
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Celebrated at St. Patrick's Church - Momence, IL
The ordained Catholic cleric's work is so difficult and so misunderstood. Similar to Christ's ministry, the diocesan priest lives alone and the reception to the message preached is not always favorable. For that reason, taking time to rest and re-energize the batteries is essential for the work the ordained cleric must do so that those under his care may be fed spiritually. We learn in today's scripture that the message, even for Jesus, was difficult to communicate, since those under the Lord's care would not accept the message about "The Bread of Life." It is this message, though, that get's us to heaven. This is the theme of Fr. Pete's homily during this Mass.

Mass for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Celebrated at St. Anne's Church - St. Anne, IL
After a long Sunday of ministry when Fr. Pete travels to Minooka, IL he often finishes the day with the Colettine Poor Clare Sisters to pray "The Franciscan Crown Rosary," followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. A video of the Franciscan Crown Rosary follows the Online Mass but in his homily, Fr. Pete touches on the basics of this devotion, focusing on five of the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary and two of the Glorious (the video cites that the two Glorious Mysteries Prayed are the Resurrection and the Coronation of our Blessed Mother; sometimes the sisters replace the Resurrection with the Assumption of the BVM... but don't tell anyone!). What the sisters do for the sake of the faithful is a testimony to their love of the faith and certainly their love of God.

UPCOMING PROJECTS
AT ST. PATRICK'S
| |
WE HAVE REDUCED OUR PARISH DEBT AT ST. PATRICK'S BY A FACTOR OF OVER $250,000 IN THE LAST TWO YEARS!!!
St. Patrick’s Church Debt finally is now just above $80,000 but we still have a bit to go. We talked about how that debt grew to over $330,000 and how our business managers have been able to reduce it by a factor of $250,000 in two years. Before we can get to the other side of our ledger at Pat’s (and think about parking lots, classrooms for our kids, etc.), this debt needs to be eradicated. Thanks for those who have helped us reduce our debt and please consider doing what you can to lowering it even further!

On August 13th, we are going to sponsor a Birthday Baseball with Fr. Pete excursion, where we will invite fifty members of our community to join us in a Joliet Slammers Baseball Game. The Knights of Columbus have donated the tickets for us and former business manager Kathy Griffiths found a local bus service to use that was economical enough to take care of our parishioners. For this event, ALL ALTAR SERVERS ARE INVITED TO GO FOR FREE, but they must be accompanied by an adult in their family, over the age of 18. If anyone else is interested in going, the cost for each ticket and the bus is $10 a person ($10 would not even cover the gas from our area to Joliet!) This is a fantastic deal and a wonderful way to bring our communities together.
-
The St. Patrick Parish Picnic will take place on Sunday, September 15. We are looking to have an Auto Show, Vendor Fair, Rummage Sale, the Illinois Migrant Council and whatever else we can put together. If you would like to help or if you have any ideas for the Picnic, please call the Parish Office at (815) 472-2864.
-
We are asking you to help us sell our 50/50 Progressive Raffle Tickets which will be sold on behalf of St. Patrick's Church. Currently, the grand prize stands at $4,680. The winning tickets will be drawn at the Parish Picnic. Tickets are available in the sacristies of our churches and at the parish offices.
