Painting Burgundy & Blue - Demo Part One

Welcome back to  another BobBlast.

In 2018, I will be enjoying April in Paris - instructing a ten day workshop on during a River Boat Cruise! I recall my earlier paintings of French cafes and wondered how it would be to revisit that theme again. I named that series of cafes, wine bottles and French cheese "The Good Life" series.

My current work is far and away from those early days, but the French River Cruise piqued my zeal to relive, revisit and repaint that subject again and see, over the years of painting, how I would approach the same image... again.

I start by sketching the composition of the original rectangular painting - but now I develop that composition into a square format.

Next, I gesso the canvas with a warm orange tone, using Holbein's Orange Acrylic Gesso.

After that has dried, I start the initial paint sketch by drawing with gold paint. The gold sparkles through some of the next layers of color. I simply like it! No other reason.

After establishing the sketched composition, I decide where the light comes from so I can see the big shapes of lights and darks. No details yet. Start off abstractly - very loose and wet. Because I have used a midtown of orange, I am now working with darks and lights.

Next comes my color combination choices. The pre-established titles of "Burgundy and Blue" hints at my color choices - burgundy wine and French Bleu Cheese. I block in variations of these colors.

In the next BobBlast, watch for Part Two! I will continue to paint all over the entire surface, developing the painting towards my goals.

Keep your brushes wet!
