"Abstract Painting & Collage Demo, Part Three"
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
This BobBlast features Abstract Painting and Collage, and is the third and final step in this series. You may recall, in Part One and Part Two, I showed one way to start an abstract painting. There are many approaches - this is just one more! Many abstract painting techniques are covered in my Abstract Acrylic Painting & Collage workshops. At the end of this BobBlast, there is a list of dates and locations for 2020.
In Part Three, I start the painting process with a concept and a title.
Specifically I find similar titles in the Roget's Thesaurus - Lots of title ideas of the same word. So I name the painting before I start! That way, I keep my focus on my original concept, whether it is a single painting I am working on, or a series of works.
Also, in the beginning of the painting process, I decide if the painting will be a gentle, soft, quiet voice or a strong, hard-edged image.
"If you don't make a decision what you want at the beginning, how will you ever achieve what you want the painting to say?"
As my painting demo develops, notice how it changes as I experiment and play in various directions. The planned parts are decided in the beginning: Concept and overall feeling, composition, color combination and the title... I continue and commit to these decisions - the 5 Cs.
The "play" is being willing to try materials - paints, inks, mediums and techniques - brushing, scraping, isopropyl alcohol. Playing in my sandbox!
When the painting has dried, the tape over the 2 inch border is removed. I apply an acrylic varnish to the painted surface (in this case, not the borders), I sign the painting, photograph it, slip it into a Clearbag - and off to the gallery it goes!
In this new decade, I'm demonstrating the possibilities of new directions.
Whenever I feel stuck in a style, I recall one of my favorite sayings...
"Anyone who doesn't change their minds, doesn't have one!"
To start a new year, start a new approach!
