BobBlast #279

"Studio Tips - Working with Canvas."

Welcome back to another BobBlast!

Way back, a long time ago in art college, we learned how to stretch our own canvas. The wood braces are called stretcher bars over which we stretched raw canvas. Next, we brushed on a primer coat of white acrylic gesso, preparing the front side for oil or acrylic paint.

The stretcher bars have slots in all four corners - that's where you shove the wooden keys. By tapping two keys into each of the four corners, you are stretching the canvas even tighter and making out more snug.

There is another quick fix for making your canvas tighter - Instead of the keys, I'll simply wet the back side with water. Within minutes, the canvas shrinks a little and becomes taut. Now I'm ready to paint!

Today, better pre-stretched canvas may have wooden stretcher cross-braces across the back. This can also prevent warping on the larger sizes. I have found that the economical large canvases tend to warp and you can never make them square after that has happened. Smaller sizes, like 16x16 inches (or smaller) are fine, pretty good and don't warp.

Finishing the canvas painting... The canvas sides are treated anyway the painter prefers. Either unfinished with a paint drip down the sides - or finished in a neutral grey color.

I allow the client who purchased the painting decide the next step - I'm not in the framing business. Either frame it, paint the sides or leave it as is!

Saving you money and building your self-confidence in your studio! Hope this helped answer some questions that I hear in my workshops.

Stretch yourself further!

Thanks again for watching and telling your friends! All my BobBlasts are archived on my website and my YouTube Channel. We post new studio tips weekly that offer real content, substance and useful techniques that work for me. And they're free! We appreciate your interest, questions, comments and support!

Some of our subscribers have asked about the "behind the scenes" people who make the weekly BobBlast possible - so we want to give a shout out and thank Bo von Hohenlohe for editing the BobBlast videos. Bo also produces websites and helps authors self-publish book. Please visit his website at www.bvhprods.com.

Below is a list of featured workshops - but did you know that I also offer private sessions in my studio? Perfect for beginners who want a crash course in watercolor or acrylic or for artists who are designing an exhibit and want to bounce ideas for content and techniques. I devote 100% of my studio time to you! Designed for 1 to 3 people - if you are interested or have questions, email kate@robertburridge.com

Here's a quick reminder and some upcoming workshops and dates.
