BobBlast #267

"How to Choose a Painting Workshop"

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

Want to take a painting workshop... but not sure where to start? Hopefully this week's BobBlast can help you get your thoughts together!

First, decide what you want to achieve in taking a painting workshop - and, write it down. Do you want to continue to paint the same old way, or venture out to paint something new? Decide on your goals - write them down.

Next, do your homework! There are many places to start looking to see what's available. Artists' magazines list workshops for all levels of skill. Art suppliers such as Cheap Joe's, Jerry's Artarama and Holbein are great resources. Look at the instructors' history, including their current following. If possible, talk to their students and ask questions. Look at the instructors' work - is it what and how you want to paint?

There are also Trade Shows like the Art of the Carolinas in Raleigh and Artisan Expo in Santa Fe. At the trade shows you can take a half-day workshop to get the feel for different instructors.

Other things to consider: Workshop locations, classroom layout and class size. There are resorts, vacation spots and special destinations that also offer painting workshops - here in the US and abroad. I book with Dillman's Resort for workshops at their vacation resort and for their traveling Paint-cations throughout the world.

Personally, I enjoy traveling vacation-type locations that offer painting workshops along with local atmosphere and a cultural experience. Robert Masla's Casa de los Artistas in Mexico, Vancouver Island Art Workshops in British Columbia and Essential Holland River Cruise presented by Dillman's are just a few of my sources.

Now that you know that workshops come in all sizes and skill levels, next decide on your instructor. Look at their work - does it speak to you? Do they paint lots of demos? Do you paint all day, or does the instructor lecture too much? How much hands-on time do you get? Can you ask questions? Do they hand out lecture and demo notes?

And finally, book early as reservations do fill up.

For me, painting workshops are for personal growth in my craft! Study with an instructor who encourages you to continue painting well after the class is finished. Knowing what needs to be done in your work does away with the fear and you will paint more!

Paint More!

Thanks again for watching and telling your friends! All my BobBlasts are archived on my website and my YouTube Channel. We post new studio tips weekly that offer real content, substance and useful techniques that work for me. And they're free! We appreciate your interest, questions, comments and support!

Some of our subscribers have asked about the "behind the scenes" people who make the weekly BobBlast possible - so we want to give a shout out and thank Bo von hohenlohe for editing the BobBlast videos. Bo also produces websites and helps authors self-publish book. Please visit his website at www.bvhprods.com.

Below is a list of featured workshops - but did you know that I also offer private sessions in my studio? Perfect for beginners who want a crash course in watercolor or acrylic or for artists who are designing an exhibit and want to bounce ideas for content and techniques. I devote 100% of my studio time to you! Designed for 1 to 3 people - if you are interested or have questions, email kate@robertburridge.com

Here's a quick reminder and some upcoming workshops and dates.
