BobBlast #249
"Freedom Painting - Prepping the Studio"
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
This month I am taking time off of just "Freedom Painting" - pushing, drawing and painting all over the place. For me, especially after traveling for weeks of workshops, I am so excited to paint loose again, back in the comfort and safety of my studio!
First of all, getting ready and preparing the art materials for what I want to accomplish - that will sometime take an entire day to complete.
To start loose and stay - I decided to work BIG - I mean really BIG! I taped a piece of unstretched canvas on my studio floor - 60 x 70 inches. I also put two large canvases on my wall - to have something else to work on during drying times. These two canvases are already painted on - I abandoned them for whatever reason. I figure they will make great under-paintings!
Back to the BIG canvas - after taping it to the floor, I added another coat of primer - this time Cheap Joe's Prime Gesso. While the surface was still wet, I drew with charcoal all over the surface, and added diluted acrylic paint to the mix - just to get a dominant color scheme started. Just for fun! Then I let the whole thing dry.
Continuing with today's demo - I drew with charcoal sticks - plus extra long twigs, or brushes that I have elongated. I refer to this time as free drawing and scrapping - all techniques to get loose and stay loose! Fun, fun fun!
Now, while the large canvas is drying, I decide to work on those two canvases. With what?
Holbein Acrylic Inks with Refillable Markers. In a previous BobBlast, I talked about the quality of these super cool inks - I wanted to stay with the feel of drawing and also keep loose. It was a wonderful morning of art making for me!
Okay - I have goofed around and stayed loose. The next decision is goal oriented... what do I want to paint? What's the content?
Stay tuned to the next BobBlast!
Below is a list of featured workshops - but did you know that I also offer private sessions in my studio? Perfect for beginners who want a crash course in watercolor or acrylic or for artists who are designing a exhibit and want to bounce ideas for content and techniques. I devote 100% of my studio time to you! Designed for 1 to 3 people - if you are interested or have questions, email kate@robertburridge.com
