BobBlast #234
Paper Weight.
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast
Painters have a plethora of surface options available to paint on. Starting with cave walls, barn siding, metal, canvas and paper - to name just a few. This BobBlast focuses on watercolor paper and the weight.
My preferred brands of paper are:
*Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper, from Italy
*Kilimanjaro watercolor paper, from Cheap Joe's Art Stuff
*Strathmore oil painting paper (no gesso required)
Often paper is identified by its thickness - 60, 80, 90, 140, 200, 260 and 300 pounds. (The weight of 500 sheets - a ream) The higher the number, the thicker the paper.
Besides the weight, paper is also identified by its surface texture:
*Cold Press (CP) has a slight tooth and will absorb a lot of paint.
*Hot Press (HP) has a much smoother feel. Paint dries quickly on this surface.
I like working on 300 lb. CP watercolor paper. It remains flat and does not warp in spite of my rigorous brushwork. I buy bulk packs or 5 or 10 sheets to get the most bang for my buck.
Another good reason I choose 300 lb is the pronounced deckle edge I can get when I tear it down to the sizes I want. Watch the video to see how I tear watercolor paper.
Now you know a bit more about paper weight plus surface texture.
And one more thing - don't forget that paper has two good front sides!
