BobBlast #226

"Practice Looser... Paint Looser!  Part One"

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

Loosen Up! Do whatever you need to do to stay away from realistic detail, such as using minuscule, two-hair brushes (you'll poke your eye out!), keeping your nose close to the painting, small water buckets or comfortable chairs - Or even wearing your "good" clothing is a great way to stay tight in your work.

For me, to practice loose, I wear old roomy clothes, stand to paint (while I still can), bigger brushes, longer brushes, more water, more juicy pigments, upbeat Pandora music fills the studio, no phones to interrupt... and embrace this time to focus on practicing looser painting techniques

Just be aware that you may fall back to old, familiar, comfort-zone bad habits. It's not necessarily where you want to be, so don't go back there! Play more, experiment and move forward to grow with your art.

Practice these loose techniques in your daily warm-up exercises so they will become second nature when you proceed to your larger pieces.

In this video I demo some of my favorite loosening up techniques - I also keep the color wheel close by so I don't have to remember what the focal point color of red is (Compose Blue). In this BobBlast I work on a loose series of floral vases. This is Part One - painting in the Dominant Reds - loosely!

In the next BobBlast, Part Two - I add the focal point color and the two spice colors to finish my loose paint sketch.

More pigment, more water, more possibilities, more results!

Just sayin'...
