"And Another Medium... A Protective Coating for Paintings."
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
It's just like waxing a car - remember those days?
Instead of applying a liquid final protective coat of varnish, I also can rub on a coat of Dorland's Wax Medium. This product has many studio uses for us artists. Used to either add to oils, powders and encaustic pigments for a variety of finishes, I wipe it on my acrylic paintings as a final "hand waxed" buffed finish.
I liberally apply the wax with a Viva paper towel, or a soft cloth - spread it all over the entire surface, then gently buff - removing any excess. Dorland's Wax Medium has the consistency of a fine cream - a combination of wax and petroleum. It does not dissolve in water so therefore has been a popular "last protective coat" over oil and acrylic paintings.
Once applied, the waxy coat buffs out into a beautiful soft sheen. When my paintings are finished and signed, I rub this material into and all over the completely dried painting with a clean, soft hand rag. After an hour, I buff the surface again with a dry, soft rag. This technique is an alternative finish to my other clear, satin finish, liquid acrylic varnish. I like them both. I was looking for an "encaustic" look, but decided not to go in that direction - just too problematic for me!
Dorland's Wax Medium is my final touch before it is wrapped and shipped.
Reminder... This is a permanent sealing medium - so I do not recommend that you paint over the wax with a water-based paint.
