Practice Daily Warm Up Exercises

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

I practice daily "repetition painting" exercises of a single subject on paper. Repetition and repeated over and over helps develop self confidence and knowledge, such as... amount of water to use, how much paint to mix and when this mixture is just right and juicy!

First, I tape six small sheets of watercolor paper FLAT on my painting table - all in a row. Think line-production! The paper size is 8x11 inches.

In this video, my subject is a monochromatic painting of a simple vase and one white flower. The purpose of this daily, repeated exercise is to concentrate on the one dominant flower (the white one) and the gradated background. No color. This is an exercise in black and white shapes! The values have been established first. Then add the monochromatic, transparent color on top of the surface.

In a month's time, I may have up to 180 small paintings to choose from! Many are called... but few are chosen and released to the galleries. These warm up paintings that didn't make the first cut are revisited and painted over another time.

In conclusion, I am often reminded that everything I touch doesn't always turn to gold. So I suggest, if you practice painting those daily nuggets - over and over again, they can turn into gold nuggets!
