Key Points from the Regular Meeting

held on May 15, 2024

  • In the Elections Update, Recorder Dana Lewis presented a financial review of the Presidential Preference Election. With 76 days to go until Primary Election Day, 90-day notices have been mailed out. Ballot proofs are going out this week for review, with over 1500 ballot styles. The new Pinal Votes Election Building is nearing completion, with move-in on course for the first week of June. Later in the meeting, the Board approved the polling locations to be used in the July 30, 2024, Primary Election and November 5, 2024, General Election pursuant to A.R.S. 16-411. (Item 7/10Y)
  • The Board approved, as presented with stipulations, three planning and zoning items to allow a higher density mixed-use development located southeast of Bella Vista Road and N Gantzel Road in San Tan Valley. (Items 13/14/15)
  • The Board approved, as presented with stipulations, one planning and zoning item to allow a Tennis Training Facility located 0.42 miles east of North Royce Road along West Phillips Road in the Queen Creek vicinity. (Item 12)
  • Leon Thomas, Government Affairs District Manager for The Bureau of Land Management Phoenix District, presented a fee proposal for recreational shooting sites. A 30-day comment period is open for this item; click here to learn more. (Item 6)
  • The Board approved a proclamation declaring the week of May 19th through May 25th, 2024, as "National Travel and Tourism Week" in Pinal County. National Travel and Tourism Week was established by a congressional resolution in 1983 in order to celebrate the travel community and highlight how travel stimulates economic growth, creates quality jobs, inspires new businesses, and elevates the quality of life for citizens every day.   • In the Supervisor District Updates item, District 1 Supervisor Kevin Cavanaugh announced he will be holding State of the County events in Coolidge on June 8th, and Maricopa on June 29th. Click here for more information on those events. He also attended a groundbreaking in Downtown Coolidge, along with Supervisor McClure, for a new Pinal Hispanic Council building. District 4 Supervisor Jeffrey McClure spent last week in Washington D.C. along with Supervisor Goodman and other city and town officials as part of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council’s ExecMission. Click here to read more. District 5 Supervisor Jeff Serdy once again reminded everyone to be conscious of fire danger with no rain forecast in the foreseeable future. District 3 Supervisor Stephen Miller recounted a tour of Ivanhoe Electric that he took earlier this week with Congressman Juan Ciscomani. Click here to read more. And finally, District 2 Supervisor Mike Goodman said that he will be holding a Bike Rodeo in San Tan Valley on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. His office has received around 40 bikes that have been donated and repaired, ready to be given to those in need. He also played a video of a recent helicopter tour that he took of Salt River Project’s facilities, which provide both power and water to Pinal County. Click below to view the video. (Item 4)
  • In the County Manager's report, Leo Lew announced three recognition weeks. May 5th through May 11th was National Correctional Officers and Employees Week. Pinal County Sheriff''s Office have around 200 staff working in the Adult Detention Center. Staying with the Sheriff's Office, May 15th was National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Finally, May 19th through the 25th is National Public Works Week - the County has around 300 staff working in its Development Services Department. He also gave an update on a Meridian Road study, that is being conducted by the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG). (Item 3)
  • The Board recognized nine staff for length of service to Pinal County. Three of these staff have reached the 25-year milestone - Jan Vidimos, a Manager with Public Health, Phillip Bentley, Court Security Officer with the Superior Court, and Rory Skedel, a Sworn Sergeant with the Sheriff's Office. Six other staff are celebrating twenty years, including three from the Sheriff's Office - Detention Officer Troy Davis, Sworn Sergeant Brian Hillman, and Sworn Lieutenant Christopher Lapre. The three other employees who have reached the 20-year milestone are Kelli Bunker, Judicial Office Supervisor with the Apache Junction Justice Court, Debra Pieschl, Caseload Manager at the County Attorney's Office, and Yolanda Smith, Custodian with the Facilities Management Department.
