Key Points from the Regular Meeting

held on May 1, 2024

  • The Board approved of Resolution No. 050124-TET calling for the question of continuing the countywide transportation road maintenance and improvement fund excise (sales) tax to be placed on the general election ballot as Proposition 486. (Items 14)
  • The Board continued until the meeting on June 5, 2024, an item requesting approval of a Special Use Permit to operate a wireless communication facility, on a portion of a 24.00± acre parcel on the west side of North Highway 79, south of Florence. (Item 11)
  • The Board approved as presented an item to authorize the Pinal County Attorney to take all necessary action to enforce the Civil Hearing Office finding of violations against Christopher W. Thiem, up to and including filing a complaint in Superior Court, utilizing appropriate resources to remedy the violations, and file liens for the cost of recovery. The property owner was found in violation of the Pinal County Development Services Code and the 2018 International Property Maintenance Code for maintaining the presence of an unpermitted structure approximately 3500 square feet in size. They directed the County Attorney's Office to report back to the Board on the item at the August 7th meeting. (Item 12)
  • The Board approved three proclamations. Firstly, they declared the week of May 6 through 10, 2024, as "Economic Development Week" in Pinal County. Economic Development Week was created by the International Economic Development Council in 2016 in order to increase awareness of local programs and services that create jobs, advance career development opportunities, and increase the quality of life in our communities. James Smith, Economic & Workforce Development Director, is pictured below left with the Board. Secondly, the Board adopted the week of May 5 through May 11, 2024, as "Public Service Recognition Week." The Board chose to take a selfie with all public service employees present at the meeting standing to be recognized (below center). Finally, they declared May 5 through May 11, 2024, as the 55th Annual "Professional Municipal Clerks Week." The declaration expresses gratitude to the "Professional County Clerks of the Board" for their invaluable contributions towards ensuring efficient county service operations within their offices.   • In the Supervisor District Updates item, District 5 Supervisor Jeff Serdy said ADOT is doing prep work on Hwy 88, which has been closed at Fish Creek Hill since 2019. He expects it should reopen in the fall. He also reminded everyone to be conscious of fire danger with no rain forecast in the foreseeable future. District 1 Supervisor Kevin Cavanaugh said that the Coolidge City Council will consider a solar farm item at their May 13th meeting, beginning at 7 p.m. District 4 Supervisor Jeffrey McClure said that last Thursday, a renovated Oracle Public Health Center reopened to the public, including a new Family Advocacy Center. McClure said that both he and District 2 Supervisor Mike Goodman are traveling to Washington DC next week with GPEC (Greater Phoenix Economic Council) related to Economic Development opportunities. Chairman Goodman played a video from last week's Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon that the Board held for all those community members who volunteer their time to sit on Pinal County's Boards and Commissions. Click below left to view the video. Finally, District 3 Supervisor Stephen Miller paid tribute to former Clerk of the Board Sheri Cluff, who passed away earlier this week. Sheri, pictured above left, served Pinal County for 35 years before retiring in 2018. Miller also played a video from a Town Hall he recently hosted in his District.   • In the County Manager's report, Leo Lew encouraged employees to complete their annual Benefits Enrollment by the May 10th deadline. He also mentioned two Sheriff's Office events taking place this week. On Thursday at 6:30 p.m., the Sheriff's Office host the 2024 Peace Officers Memorial Service. And on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the San Tan Valley Complex, PCSO will host an Open House and Career Expo. Click here for more info about both events. (Item 2)
