Report from the CMS Board of Directors - Sept. 16, 2022

Dear Colleague:

It has been a great honor to serve as your president this past year. The Sept. 16 meeting of the CMS Board of Directors was my last meeting serving as your board chair and I now pass the gavel to your new president Patrick Pevoto, MD, MBA, for 2022-2023.

I am proud of the work of the board throughout the year and particularly at this meeting. We heard informational reports and took action to keep the Colorado Medical Society on a path to best meet members' needs. The board:

  • Discussed the results of a member survey that showed members strongly value CMS advocacy and information, and would prioritize efforts by CMS to promote health equity and reduce health disparities.
  • Heard an update on a potential physician wellbeing program through which CMS could facilitate counseling or coaching to reduce burnout; the next step is to develop a business plan for the program.
  • Hired a new chief executive officer -- Dean Holzkamp, a 21-year CMS veteran and former chief operating officer -- and heard Mr. Holzkamp's vision for the organization.
  • Voted to sign onto a letter opposing a moratorium by the Aurora city council through which this non-medical entity would dictate medical practice.

The board also:

  • Took action on two Central Line proposals; all members will receive a separate communication about the actions and be asked if the board "got it right."
  • Directed the CMS Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs to consider a resolution to the American Medical Association that would direct the AMA to study and develop guidance for instances when physicians are legally prohibited from providing care in good faith to patients.
  • Approved committee rosters for 2022-2023 and a calendar for quarterly board meetings.
  • Approved the budget for the 2023 fiscal year.

Thank you to all who joined CMS for the Sept. 16 board meeting and the CMS Annual Meeting in Breckenridge. It was wonderful to be back together in person. I encourage you to continue to engage with CMS and reach out at any time by emailing
