May 22, 2024

Dear Providence,

At Tuesday's Board of Supervisors Meeting, I presented a Board Matter to request staff to look for options for revenue diversification, including the implementation of a meals tax. The continuous increase in real estate tax is creating an affordability challenge for all residents and we must look for additional tools to reduce our over-reliance on the real estate tax revenue. I also presented Board Matters related to the upcoming Early Childhood Education Roundtable and Olam Tikvah's 60th Anniversary. You can read the Board meeting highlights below.

Early voting for the June 18 Democratic and Republican primaries are ongoing at three locations in Fairfax County. Please note that voting locations will be closed on Monday, May 27th in honor of the Memorial Day holiday. An additional 18 early voting sites will open on June 8th. Learn more about the upcoming election and what's on your ballot here.

I am thrilled to invite you to join an Early Childhood Education Roundtable on Thursday, May 30th from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. This important conversation will spotlight access to resources, gaps in services, and educational opportunities available for families with children from birth to 5-year-olds. You can find more information here.

Lastly, my office is still collecting diapers to benefit Fairfax Diapers and Higher Horizons. I invite you to join in supporting our community in addressing diaper insecurity. Please consider dropping off donations of any opened or unopened packages of diapers of any size at the Jim Scott Community Center. Read more about the Annual Diaper Drive here.

With gratitude,

May 21st Board Meeting Highlights

At Tuesday's Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting, the Board designated May 2024 as Older Adults and Adult Abuse Prevention Month, Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and Fight the Bite Month.

I presented the following Board Matters:

The Board also took the following actions:

Providence District

  • Held a public hearing and approved PCA 79-P-038-03 that allows the continuation of usage of a residential house on 2818 Juniper Street as a commercial site for a towing company.

  • Held a public hearing and approved PCA 2011-PR-023-04/ CDPA 2011-PR-023-03 which will allow the conversation of an office building planned for construction along Arbor Row to instead be built as a residential high rise. This will both add new housing stock, add more park space, and contribute to affordable housing within the Tysons Urban Center.

Countywide

  • Held a public hearing and approved the proposed amendments to the Police Officers and Uniformed Retirement Systems Ordinances that allows police and firefighters to purchase up to four years of "service credit" for prior active duty military service.
