Summer Programming, Projects Keep Schools Buzzing

District 28 schools are buzzing with activities this summer. School may be on summer break but 428 students are back in the classroom exploring a new hobby or interest, participating in extended school year or academic boost programming. There are 93 teachers, assistants and related services staff who support summer programming, Superintendent Dr. Jason Pearson reported.

Westmoor School hosts programming for students ranging from Young Explorers through rising 4th-grade students and Northbrook Junior High hosts rising 5th-grade through 8th-grade students. Northbrook Park District uses Greenbriar School for summer camp programs and TrueNorth special education cooperative uses Meadowbrook School.

Teachers are also engaged in professional learning throughout the summer. A total of 32 classes are scheduled, said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kris Raitzer. Most courses are taught by colleagues and offer teachers the opportunity to pursue individual interests and goals for continued growth so they return to the classroom refreshed and ready to try out new ideas.

Buildings & Grounds

Summertime is Building Improvement Time

Our schools stay in great shape because every summer each classroom is emptied so floors can be waxed or get a heavy shampoo. Desks and fixtures are cleaned so that when the school year begins on August 23rd, the buildings are gleaming. Summer building improvement projects are also in full swing, said Chief School Business Official Jessica Donato. This summer’s projects include:

  • New HVAC unit for the Greenbriar Auditorium
  • The large gym at Northbrook Junior High will have a fresh look next year, with a new divider to replace the original wood panel divider, new lighting and fresh paint including wall graphics.
  • An elevator will be replaced at the junior high.
  • A 4-foot security fence will be installed around the Westmoor School playground.
  • Lighting upgrades in all the buildings are being funded by a grant from ComEd.

Facilities Master Planning Continues

Parents and staff members participated in facilities workshops at each of the district’s schools in early June as part of the research being conducted by DLA Architects.

During the workshops participants were asked to ‘Dream Big’ and think about what education will look like in the future and how our existing buildings meet those needs, said Chief School Business Official Jessica Donato.

Earlier this spring, all staff and parents were invited to participate in a facilities survey. The firm received 500 parent responses and 240 staff member responses. We are grateful to everyone who participated in these workshops and surveys for their commitment to helping ensure our schools are safe and inviting places for our students to learn.

The next step is for the architects to report back to the Buildings and Grounds Committee before the start of the school year. In addition to compiling community feedback, the master facilities planning process includes:

  • Architectural surveys of existing facilities;
  • Mechanical, electrical and plumbing survey;
  • Roof Evaluation and analysis of all buildings;
  • Safety and security assessment;
  • Capacity studies of all schools including room utilization, programs and services;
  • Demographic study to forecast student enrollment;
  • Short-term and long-term priorities;
  • Project cost estimates for recommended improvements and maintenance items;
  • High-level bubble diagrams and preliminary cost estimates for possible remodeling or additions at Meadowbrook.

DLA is working with various engineers, a demographer and a school safety and security specialist to provide their expertise. A final report is expected in December.
