"Looking Back" Photo Collection

Calling all Blum Construction employees!

Do you have a collection of old photos from previous years at Blum or your time in construction? Whether that's just last year, five years ago, or 30+ years back, we are in search of employee-captured photos to add to a "Looking Back" collection, which will be shared monthly in the company newsletter. There's nothing else like looking back and reminiscing.

Please share your photos! They can be of projects, people, or both.

Photos and questions can be sent to Mallory Wadsworth via email at mallory.smith@flblum.com. If you have photos saved on your phone and would like to share, text them to Mallory at (336) 745-5459.

HIGH PERFORMANCE

The University Towers Team

A BIG shout out to the indoor and outdoor University Towers Renovation team at North Carolina State University for closing out Phase I strong! Jim Rains, NC State's Director of Formal Construction, left a very complimentary note on the High Performing Teams Praise wall.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Summer Interns

We said goodbye to our 2024 Summer Interns on July 25th. Their last day consisted of a Professional Development Seminar with Lily Cochrane, VP of People Strategies, and their individual presentations were evaluated by Blum Construction leadership. They ended the day with a celebratory dinner at River Birch Lodge. It is evident that they learned professional skills and hands-on experience in the construction field. They certainly left an impression at Blum Construction!

Frank Factors

PEOPLE NEVER FORGET HOW YOU MAKE THEM FEEL

Everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Choose your words carefully and control your emotions. No matter who you communicate with – a client, designer, a vendor, a trader partner, or a co-worker – always be polite. Remember, everyone is a potential customer.

IMPLEMENTING THE FRANK FACTOR

Signage For Our Neighbors

With exterior construction of the UNC School of the Arts Stevens Center underway, many adjacent business owners were beginning to feel as though the work was impacting the flow of customers.

Instead of ignoring their concerns, Blum decided that we would do what we could to help the situation. A few team members put their heads together to make custom wayfinding signs for each of the impacted businesses. Our hope is that this act of caring and consideration will ease their stress and help customers find their way!

Kudos to the people who worked to make this happen:

The Spotlight is on

Nate Pankow

Nate just celebrated Year 1 at Blum and is working diligently on the complex McCormick Field project along with many other challenging projects. He deserves a spotlight for going above and beyond in his role as Preconstruction Manager. His dedication to serving clients, passion for the work, and enthusiasm for getting the job done right is remarkable!

To shine the spotlight on Nate a little further, here are his answers to a few questions about his background, his role, and current project focus.

Q: What led you to a career in construction?

A: I went to school for Civil Engineering and really enjoyed the subject matter, but I preferred the variety that Construction Management offered. I like the idea of knowing “a little bit of everything” and seeing how all the components interact and come together to form something new.

Q: What is your favorite part about your job at Blum Construction?

A: Having a variety of challenging projects that I get to take from early stages of design, all the way to the construction phase. Getting to develop a deep understanding of projects is usually the best way to ensure the project is successful long-term.

Q: What’s your favorite part about working on the current McCormick Field project?

A: The approach that we have of including the operations team with the preconstruction process has been a huge help on a complex project like this one. The team is great to work with, and always ready to assist in making sure the project is a success.

… also it’s great to visit Asheville and enjoy the great food and breweries.

Q: What is something important you have learned while working on the McCormick Field project?

A: McCormick Field is a prime example of the type of project where it pays to know the people that are at the stadium working every day. There was a long report of items that needed to be addressed, and by walking through the report with the staff we were able to narrow down that list considerably and identify better ways to address the issues.

THANK YOU, RETIREES! AND CONGRATULATIONS!

Eddie Snow

42 Years at Blum

After 42 years at Blum Construction, Eddie Snow has been with us through decades of change and growth. Now, as he officially hangs up his Blum toolbelt, we congratulate him on a sincere job-well-done and many thanks for the impact he had on the people he worked with over the years and the company as a whole. Eddie will be missed, and we wish him the best as he transitions into his well-deserved retirement.

Anna Gallimore

7 Years at Blum

While Anna has officially worked at Blum for 7 years, her impact on the company spans close to 30! Her 20-year career with one of our clients, Salem Academy & College, led her to a close relationship with Blum and eventually a new career path in construction. As Anna sets aside her hard hat to enjoy retirement, we reflect on her determination, confidence amidst challenges, and grit that inspired us all.
