Blue-green algae bloom in Ten Mile Bay UPDATE

As reported in the last Newsflash, in mid-July the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) confirmed a small blue-green algae bloom in a shallow bay on the eastern end of Ten Mile Bay, Lake of Bays. Water sampling was conducted to determine if toxins are present, but the results are not yet available. The status of the bloom is described as ongoing on the SMDHU website, although several residents on Ten Mile Bay have been unable to locate the bloom.

The SMDHU is cautioning residents and businesses not to drink water from the lake where blue-green algae is visible and to take the following precautions:

  • Do not use the lake water for the preparation of infant formula.
  • Do not allow pets or livestock to drink or swim in the water where an algae bloom is visible.
  • Be cautious about eating fish caught in water where blue-green algae blooms occur.
  • Do not boil water or use herbicides, copper sulphate or other algaecides as this may break open algae cells and release toxins into the water.
  • Avoid swimming and other water sport activities where an algae bloom is visible.

Lake of Bays Association is Looking for Directors

There are currently several openings on the Lake of Bays Association Board of Directors.

What makes a good Lake of Bays Association Board member?

  • A willingness to dedicate some of your time to help us work toward our objectives.
  • A member in good standing.

Interested individuals are asked to send a brief resume and a short expression of why you feel you are a good candidate, in confidence, to Lili Davis-Burchat, Executive Coordinator by September 11, 2020. Interviews for prospective directors will be scheduled. Questions can also be directed to Lili by email or 647-834-0186.

We encourage you to consider a position on the Lake of Bays Association Board of Directors.

The purpose of the Lake of Bays Association is to promote, sustain and enhance a clean and healthy natural environment, a well-serviced community and a safe and peaceful Lake of Bays.
Aids to Navigation

Last month, the Association was contacted by residents concerned about two buoys on the lake - one was missing or sunk, and the light was out on the other. Both have been fixed.

If you notice a problem with an Aid to Navigation or a danger to mariners, you can send a email to the Navigational Warning Desk and they will issue a warning immediately. If you are interested in seeing all the Navigational warnings in your area you can visit the NAVWARN site and search for 6023 (Lake of Bays) under Charts. You can also sign up to receive an email when an issue is reported on the lake.
