JOIN DEMOCRATS ACROSS GEORGIA FOR OUR DAY OF ACTION!
It’s not too late to sign up to canvass on September 25th for Abrams/Warnock and our local Democratic candidates
Democrats across Georgia will be out on Sunday, September 25th, canvassing to get out the vote. Early voting begins in 4 weeks, and it's time to hit the streets. Canvassing remains the single most effective way to turn out the vote, and we want to be sure that every Democrat in Hall Country shows up at the polls.
The best way to canvass is with a friend, or a group of friends, so sign up together!
We will provide all the information you need to be a part of this statewide effort. You are the key to making sure we put Stacey in the governor's mansion, return Reverend Warnock to the Senate, and elect our local candidates to state and county office.
Three-hour shifts are available starting at noon, 3 pm and 6 pm.
Sign up to participate in today’s big Day of Action event. You can also sign up to canvass on Wednesday or Friday this week.

WE HAVE STACEY ABRAMS YARD SIGNS!
Letters to the Editor
This week the editor at The Times published several letters from readers who expressed support for Democratic causes, candidates and values. It's a pleasant reminder that not everyone in Hall and the surrounding counties is a member of the cult of Trump.
Judy Kreps of Dahlonega laid out Stacey Abram's plans for helping rural Georgians. Dale Granata of Flowery Branch had a short message to the editor about the recent content: "The letters section is worse than a right-wing website." Hall County Democrat Howard Stacy of Gainesville expressed his concern over the security issues inherent in Trump's mishandling of classified documents. Linda Ryan, of the North Georgia Conservation Coalition, encouraged readers to take action on the climate crisis.
If you would like to represent for Democrats, to let people know we aren't actually satan incarnate, here is the link to submit: https://www.gainesvilletimes.com/about-us-main/contact-letter/
If you are willing to sign your name to a letter to the editor that we have composed, please email us at HallCountyDemocrat@gmail.com.

Opinion: Abrams will help rural Georgia | Living in rural Georgia, it's easy to think that our government doesn't care much about our communities. From broadband access to outgrown infrastructure to transportation and education, rural communities like ours face many challenges - challenges that often we're left to solve on our own.
Opinion: Trump's handling of classified material is concerning | Some 62 years ago (plus or minus a few) I was an Airman 3rd Class helping to protect this country from possible attack by Russian bombers flying over the North Pole, across the Canadian wilderness, and into norther Michigan to destroy American's industrial might.
Opinion: Letters section too much conservative propaganda | By allowing ads to appear on this site, you support the local businesses who, in turn, support great journalism. Opinion: Letters section too much conservative propaganda Why am I subscribing to this paper? The letters section is worse than a right-wing website.
Opinion: Why climate action must happen now | There should be no doubt that Americans know we are in a climate crisis. Climate and environmental scientists have been warning us about this crisis for over 40 years! Many of us failed to believe the warning and since the problem didn't affect us personally, we didn't see a reason to act.

Next January 6th Committee Hearing:
Wednesday, September 28, 1 PM
Chair Bennie Thompson said this is probably the last public hearing but "nothing is set in stone." Additional hearings could be televised if there is new information to share. If there is new information, it may come from the interview with Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. The Committee wants to question her about her communications with John Eastman, who spearheaded the effort to get Mike Pence to overturn certified election results from certain states and declare Trump won reelection.
In an attempt to prevent another such attempt to overturn certified election results, the US House passed an election reform bill. It will now go the Senate, most likely to be aborted by the Republicans.
In other news related to elections and voting: the Hall County Commission voted Thursday to replace Tom Smiley as chair of the Hall County Board of elections. A Republican, Smiley was respected and appreciated by the other members of the Board.. Democrat and BoE member David Kennedy called the commission’s vote an act of retribution, “especially in light of the job he has done.” Smily and the BoE took the Commission to court over the Commission's attempt to have the elections director report to them instead of the Board of Elections. The new chair, Republican Jack Noa, will take over on January 1.
Since the overturning of Roe, women have been registering to vote in higher percentages than men, and many women have decided to run for office. In Georgia, most of those women are Democrats. Georgia Republicans continue to run mostly white men. Let's make sure we elect candidates that reflect the diverse population of Georgia.

House passes election reform bill to curb future interference; 9 Republicans join Democrats | The House on Wednesday approved a post-Jan. 6 election reform bill intended to blunt future challenges to presidential elections. The Presidential Election Reform Act, crafted largely by Reps. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., and Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., passed by a 229-203 vote, with nine Republicans joining the Democratic majority in favor of it.
Lawrence: Trump could now lose everything including his freedom | MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell analyzes the latest loss Donald Trump has faced in the Justice Department's classified documents investigation and explains why the worst two days in Donald Trump's life are the day he lost the 2020 election and today in light of that court decision and the lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
The party gap with women candidates is closing nationally - but not in Georgia statewide races | This year's midterm election has a sharpened focus on Georgia women - who make up more than half of the state's electorate - as issues like abortion rights fuel efforts to mobilize voters across the political spectrum. Although nearly a third of the candidates running for statewide office in November are women, none of them are Republicans.

Tom Smiley will be out as election board chairman. Why and who's replacing him | "It's not an easy job, but we did bump heads, and I didn't really appreciate being sued and having to pay another lawyer," Board of Commissioners Chairman Richard Higgins said before the vote. "But Tom did a good job overall. We get along fine now. We just need somebody new to come in there."
U.S. Congress' Jan. 6 committee plans next hearing for Sept. 28 | WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol is planning to hold its next hearing on Sept. 28, the panel's chairman said on Tuesday. Representative Bennie Thompson told reporters he expected the public hearing would be the panel's last, unless something else happens.
The variety of voter groups has grown in Georgia, reflecting an increasingly diverse electorate - Georgia Recorder | Voting advocacy groups in Georgia are working to mobilize a disengaged and diverse group of voters for the upcoming midterm elections that will determine not just leadership of the state government but could also once again decide control in Congress.
With midterms looming, Georgia officials are grappling with challenges from election deniers | LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia - One by one, the speakers approached the podium at the elections meeting to air their grievances. One person asked about alleged "phantom" voters who may be registered in Gwinnett County, their community just northwest of Atlanta. Another suggested officials count ballots by hand to avoid fraud.

The AJC opinion piece below highlights women candidates in Georgia, including our 9th District Chair June Krise, who is running for the Georgia House. |
OPINION: Democratic women are running on abortion, even in deep red Georgia | "That's what grieves me, is that I know the agony that people go through when they decide that they're going to have an abortion." Krise has almost no expectation that she'll defeat the GOP incumbent in the race, Republican state Rep. Stan Gunter, who won his seat in 2020 with more than 80% of the vote.
Herschel Walker says his Democratic opponent will 'embarrass' him during debate - CNN Video | Georgia Republican Senate nominee Herschel Walker was asked how he is preparing for an upcoming debate against Democratic opponent Sen. Raphael Warnock.
Warnock team reacts to Georgia poll showing GOP ahead in Senate, governor elections: 'This race will be close' | Georgia's Senate and gubernatorial midterm races are tightening, as a new poll found the majority of voters in the state hope to see Republicans pick up control of Congress in November.
Backlash over controversial flyer aimed at Stacey Abrams prompts Forsyth Republicans to cancel rally | FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. - A flyer from the Forsyth County Republican Party is sparking anger, with some calling it racist and dangerous, especially given the county's violent past in race relations. The flyer came out just days before a barbecue meet-and-greet for gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams Sunday in Cumming.
