What to Expect after Getting a COVID-19 Vaccine

Do we still wear a mask after we have been vaccinated?

Yes. The vaccine 95% effective, meaning you still have a 5 % chance of getting COVID but at lessened effects of transmitting this to a loved one.

It’s important for everyone to continue using all the tools available to help stop this pandemic as we learn more about how COVID-19 vaccines work in real-world conditions. Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when around others, stay at least 6 feet away from others, avoid crowds, and wash your hands often.

With roll-outs of new COVID vaccines picking up momentum, conversations about racial inequities in medical science have been thrust to the forefront. Even a cursory glance at modern American history explains why it is no surprise that nearly half of all Black Americans have said they don’t trust COVID vaccines.

PLACING CHILDREN WITH FAMILIES

AdobeStock_324255375_Medium size.jpeg

By Marge Snider

Once a family has been selected for a child and the child has been prepared for placement, the adoption worker and the family may develop and implement an individualized plan for how and when the child will move into the family’s home. This plan must carefully consider the needs of the child and family to:

  • Provide continuity of caregiving
  • Ease the child’s adjustment
  • Enhance the child’s understanding of the event
  • Allow an opportunity for important people in the child’s life to help the child transition
  • Facilitate new attachments
  • Plan for postadoption contacts
  • Help the family and child cope with changes and stress

Aromantic What???

By Tranquilla Golden-Taylor

As I am still getting familiar with all the terminology for the LGBTQ+ population, aromanticism is definitely a new one for me. At first glance, I understood it to be a person who lacks interest in romantic relationships for whatever reason, be it preference or need, but that now poses the question of what is classified as romance. To get to the bottom of this, I took a deep dive into articles, peer-review journals, and even asked some amazing people to define and elaborate on what it means to be aromantic.

So, what is aromanticism?

National Make a Friend Day

By Debo Ofzowitz

This month on February 11 it’s National Make a Friend Day.

Making new friends can be challenging at a time when mask wearing and social distancing is our current normal, but we have an option for you. When you donate to the 26Health Every Letter Fund at any level you aren’t just a friend of 26Health, you are Family.

For a donation of only $25 you are covering the out of pocket cost of one appointment for a low-income, uninsured patient. For a monthly contribution of only $10/month you are providing mental health services to someone who cannot afford treatment on their own. Through your contribution to the Every Letter Fund, you are supporting uninsured and unemployed members of our community, possibly your own friends and family, and bringing much needed access to medical and behavioral healthcare.

Become a member of the 26Health family and make new friends through your support of our community.

Beautiful You_GREY_NO_TAG_O.jpg

By Brandi Concolino

I often get asked which is more effective, laser hair removal, or electrolysis. The answer is BOTH. Laser works best on brown and black hair and all skin types. Electrolysis works on all hair colors and skin types. Most people with brown or black hair opt to do laser because it’s a faster treatment and quicker process and it’s more cost-effective in the long run. Because the laser doesn’t work on red, blonde, gray, or white hairs, electrolysis is the hair removal method of choice for those hair colors. On a small area, it takes about 18-24 months to clear an area of hair using electrolysis. With the laser, a small area can be mostly cleared within 6-8 months. It is important to note that with laser, you must avoid sun exposure 1 week prior and 1-week after your treatment. When you come in for a consultation, we will go over the best method for your hair and skin and will get you on a treatment plan that works for you.

Born and raised in Orlando, 26Health Patient Care Coordinator Fred Cotto-Lewis has a direct connection to the populations he serves. Fred was born at Orange Memorial Hospital, now known as ORMC (a part of the Orlando Health system), and grew up with his family in the projects of Orlando’s west-side Paramore neighborhood. He was just 16 going on 17 when his mother asked him directly if he was gay and without hesitation, he told her yes.
